— A 21-year-old Shawnee man has been arrested after he was involved in a fatal crash Sunday that killed a 25-year-old woman at 75th Street and Metcalf Avenue in Overland Park.

The District Attorney’s office says Raphael Sherman of Shawnee was charged with involuntary manslaughter and two counts of reckless aggravated battery on Monday. He is being held in the Johnson County Adult Detention Center in Olathe.

Denise Lopez, 25, who was 39 weeks pregnant, died as a result of the injuries she sustained in the crash after giving birth to the baby.

“Her baby’s life was saved through medical intervention at the hospital,” the Johnson County District Attorney’s office said in a news release on Monday.

In a news release, Overland Park Police said Sherman was driving a tan passenger car west on 75th Street at about 7 p.m. when a Prairie Village police officer attempted to pull him over. According to police, Sherman acted like he was going to pull over and then accelerated away from the officer toward Metcalf Avenue. Police said he ran a red light and hit a silver Chevy truck carrying two occupants, including Lopez.

“The impact pushed the vehicles into the southbound lanes where they impacted a minivan carrying five occupants,” said Overland Park police officer George Naylor.

Johnson County Med-Act transported six people to area hospitals with injuries ranging from minor to critical.

The Overland Park Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit investigated the crash.
