Geocaching ‘scavenger hunt’ set later this month in Shawnee Mission Park
The Johnson County Park & Recreation District is planning a modern-day scavenger hunt later this month in Shawnee Mission Park.
The "Mid-Summer’s Night Cache" is for all ages and will begin at 6 p.m. July 29, starting under Shelter No. 2 in Shawnee Mission Park, 7900 Renner Road. Geocaching is an outdoor treasure-hunting game in which participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver to hide and seek containers called "caches," which contain a logbook and a "treasure" - usually toys or trinkets.
Participants will receive use of a GPS device (one per family), and an introductory "how to" session. After the hunt, participants will gather around one of the park’s fire pits for hotdogs and s’mores.
The cost for one two-hour event is $11 per person for Johnson County residents or $13 per person for nonresidents. A family rate for up to four people is also offered at a cost of $29 for residents or $32 for nonresidents. Preregistration is required by July 25 for this program.
