SMNW student noted in statewide financial scholar contest
A Shawnee Mission Northwest High School student earned an honorable mention in the 2016 Financial Scholars Essay Contest, jointly sponsored by the Office of the Kansas Securities Commissioner and the office of the State Back Commissioner.
Students were asked to submit an essay profiling an individual whose personal financial decisions impacted the lives of others and apply the wisdom or lessons from that person’s life to their own future financial plans. To be eligible, students must have participated in at least one of three financial literacy programs sponsored by the state agencies: EverFi, the Stock Market Game, or LifeSmarts.
Reid Thornburg, a senior at Shawnee Mission Northwest High School, won a $100 honorable mention award for his essay profiling his cross country coach Van Rose. He noted that Coach Rose taught him many lessons about being a good steward of not only his time and energy, but also of his money and finances.
Thornburg was one of 10 honorable mentions. The top five winning essays earned scholarships ranging from $500 to $2,500.
