Mill Valley football rallies past BVSW, 55-24

After trailing 24-10 two minutes into the third quarter, Mill Valley scored 45 unanswered points on the way to a 55-24 victory over Blue Valley Southwest Friday in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs. Junior quarterback Brody Flaming had five total touchdowns, and had 200-plus yards through the air and on the ground. Mill Valley will turn its attention to a home quarterfinal matchup Friday against St. James. The Jaguars defeated the Thunder, 35-13, back in Week 1.
Petz powers St. James football past Schlagle, 53-17

While Schlagle running back Cornelius Ruff rushed for 141 yards on 23 carries to give him 2,000-plus yards for the season, it was St. James Academy junior Jack Petz and the Thunder that had the last laugh in Friday’s Class 5A second-round playoff matchup. Petz found pay dirt four times, and rushed for 143 yards on just 10 totes to lead the Thunder to a 53-17 win over the No. 1-seeded Stallions. The Thunder will take on Mill Valley in the 5A quarterfinals at 7 p.m. Friday at Mill Valley.
Last-second field goal lifts SM North football over Lawrence High, 52-49

After suffering a season-ending loss to Lawrence High last year, Shawnee Mission North kicker Oscar Aguilar helped the Indians return the favor Friday, as he booted a 26-yard field goal to send his squad past the Lions, 52-49, in the second round of the Class 6A playoffs. Senior quarterback Will Schneider 17 of 35 for 385 yards, while tossing the four touchdowns and two interceptions. Schneider’s top target was sophomore Noah Laird, who hauled in eight catches for 219 yards and two touchdowns. Senior running back Marcos Garcia set the tone for the Indians on the ground with 115 yards and two touchdowns a 2-point conversion on 29 carries. The Indians will take on the Lancers of SM East in the Class 6A quarterfinals at 7 p.m. Friday at SM North.
St. James soccer shuts out Bishop Carroll, 2-0, to reach 5A state title match

St. James Academy sophomore Zach Flax scored for the first time at the varsity level, and junior Luis Alvarado added an insurance goal from 30 yards out, as the Thunder shut out Bishop Carroll, 2-0, Friday in the Class 5A state semifinals at Emporia High School. St. James advanced to the state title match for the first time since 2013, and will play Eastern Kansas League foe Blue Valley Southwest at 2 p.m. Saturday for the 5A crown.
