JCPRD to offer children’s concert, adult exercise class in Shawnee

November 14, 2016

The Johnson County Parks and Recreation District is featuring a couple exciting events this month.

Here are two activities taking place in Shawnee:

Singer-songwriter next up in kid-friendly music series

Janie Next Door, also known as musician, singer, and songwriter, Jane Christison, is the next Kid-Friendly Musical Performance being presented by the Johnson County Museum.

She will perform at 10 a.m. on Nov. 30 at the Mill Creek Activity Center, 6518 Vista Drive.

The 30-minute show is designed for ages 2 through 10 and will feature fun, music, and movement.

Cost is $3 per participant. Museum members are free.

Individual walk-in participations are welcome, if space is available, but tickets are sold on a first-come, first-served basis.

Advance reservations are strongly recommended and can be obtained by calling 913-715-2575. A maximum of three children are allowed per adult.

The final entry in the current season of Kid-Friendly Musical Performances will be Doo-Dad Mike on Dec. 28.

Women on weights exercise class begins Nov. 29

Women can learn the best way to use weights to build a strong, lean body during an adult exercise class being offered beginning in late November.

Titled Women on Weights, this moderate intensity class is for ages 14 and older. The class is specifically designed to teach women how to expand their strength and endurance while shaping those hard-to-work areas.

This class will take place at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays beginning Nov. 29 at the Mill Creek Activity Center.

The cost for five 50-minute sessions is $37.50 per person for Johnson County residents or $41.25 for nonresidents.

For more information or to register, call 913-831-3359.

Strolling trip to Hillsdale Lake is set for Nov. 30

A trip to Hillsdale Lake State Park in late November is the final destination in the fall and winter season of the Wednesday Walks program being presented by the 50 Plus Department of the JCPRD.

The program lets participants make friends while exploring the great outdoors.

JCPRD does the driving while you can relax, listen to the wind and experience new destinations.

The outing departs at 9 a.m. on Nov. 30 at Antioch Park, 6501 Antioch.

The cost for each six-hour outing, including van transportation to the walk site, is $19 per person for Johnson County residents or $21 for nonresidents.

Participants should bring a sack lunch for a picnic after the walk, as well as a few dollars in case the group decides to stop for ice cream.

Hillsdale State Park is located in northwestern Miami County and encompasses more than 12,000 acres. After a quick stop at the park’s visitor center Wednesday walkers will take to the trails and will be on the lookout for large flocks of snow geese that typically migrate to the area in late November. This walk is expected to involve an easy level of exertion.

For more information or to register, call (913) 831-3359. To register for the Hillsdale Lake walk at www.jcprd.com, complete a barcode search for 33507.
