MVHS cross country sweeps Mill Valley Cat Classic team titles

Mill Valley's cross country team received first-place finishes from Greg Haynes and Britton Nelson as the Jaguars won both the boys and girls races at the Mill Valley Cat Classic Thursday at Shawnee Mission Park.

Haynes clocked in at 17:04.77 to edge Pembroke Hill's Reece Jones by three seconds for the boys individual title.

Mill Valley's No. 2 through 5 runners finished within 20 seconds of each other. Jakob Coacher (17:21.30), Tyler Coad (17:29.43) and Gavin Overbeck (17:33.48) finished fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively, and Nick Schmidt (17:41.02) followed in eighth as five Jaguars placed in the top 10.

The Jaguars scored 24 points to win the boys race. The next closest team was Blue Valley with 87 points.

Sam Hubert led De Soto to a third-place finish after taking ninth overall with a time of 17:42.53. Andre Vanmeerhaeghe and Kason Jackson also placed in the top 15 at 13th and 14th, respectively.

Maranatha Christian Academy did not field a full team, but was led by Alstan Walker — who finished 58th overall with a time of 19:55.06.

Shawnee Mission North did not run its normal varsity squad, but was led by a 45th-place finish from Isaac Diggs. The SM North junior finished with a time of 19:13.77.

The Mill Valley girls squad beat out Pembroke Hill by 16 points to win its home meet. The Jaguars scored 47 points after placing their top seven runners in the top 20.

Nelson won her third consecutive meet after posting a time of 20:33.08 to clip runner-up Kelsey Kinkade of Blue Valley by 10 seconds. Freshman Emerson Kaiser joined Nelson in the top 10 with a time of 21:54.19, which was good for seventh place.

Morgan Koca (11th, 22:10.34), Molly Haymaker (12th, 22:23.99), Jenna Walker (16th, 22:35.40), Delaney Kemp (17th, 22:47.93) and Bella Hadden (20th, 22:58.11) rounded out the top seven for the Jaguars.

Finishing behind Nelson and Kinkade in third place was De Soto's Gabby Collins. The De Soto junior finished with a time of 21:28.74 to lead the Wildcats to fifth place in the girls team standings.

De Soto's LaMayh Ricks also placed in the top 20 after clocking in with a time of 22:35.18 to take 15th overall.

Faith Eisele paced Maranatha with a time of 23:27.99 to finish in 29th place.

Lilianne Winston led SM North after placing 53rd overall with a time of 25:22.76.
