Football roundup: SJA wins first EKL game vs. BVSW; SMN falls to Lawrence High

September 10, 2016

St. James Academy earned its first win as a member of the Eastern Kansas League Friday night, as the Thunder topped Blue Valley Southwest, 12-7, at Blue Valley High School.

The Thunder took a 10-7 lead shortly before the break when senior quarterback Sammy Wheeler hit senior tight end Travis Pickert with a 10-yard touchdown pass.

Pickert helped lead the St. James defense shut out the Timberwolves in the second half to salvage the victory.

The Thunder (1-1) will take on Gardner-Edgerton at 7 p.m. Friday.

SM North blitzed by Lawrence High, 52-26

Shawnee Mission North was unable to avenge last season's first-round playoff loss to Lawrence High, as the Indians fell to the Lions, 52-26, at LHS.

The Lions put pressure on SM North quarterback Will Schneider early and often, and sacked him three times on the night.

After Schneider totaled 453 yards of offense in the Indians' 56-32 loss to Lawrence High in 2015, Lions coach Dirk Wedd knew that his defense would have to be on the top of its game. Wedd had some high praise for Schneider following the game.

"He's just a handful. Every time he drops back, you just hold your breath because you know something bad can happen. He's a very special player," Wedd said. "The only way we play them again is if we both get deep in the playoffs. That would be great, but golly, he's had quite the career. He's made some sleepless nights for me in the last couple of years."

After a slow start, Schneider caught fire late on his way to completing 20 of his 34 passes for 299 yards. Schneider also threw a 66-yard touchdown pass to sophomore receiver Noah Laird in the fourth quarter, and was picked off by Lawrence High defensive back Clarence King.

Laird racked up 116 receiving yards and tied sophomore Billy Conaway with a team-high five catches. Conaway also found the end zone on each of his two carries — the first coming from three yards out after being stuffed in the backfield, and the second on a 40-yard run.

The Indians (1-1) will return home to host Lansing at 7 p.m. Friday in a non-league matchup.
