Tennis roundup: De Soto wins third straight tournament; SJA second at Maize South

The De Soto tennis team kept on rolling Friday with a first-place finish at the Topeka Hayden tournament. St. James placed second at the Maize South tournament.
Mill Valley fourth, De Soto fifth at Timberwolves Invitational

The Mill Valley and De Soto swim teams finished fourth and fifth, respectively, at the Timberwolves Invitational on Saturday at Blue Valley Southwest. Jaz Schwegman (500-yard freestyle), Allison Godfrey (100-yard butterfly) and Jordan Robinson (200-yard freestyle) won their respective events for Mill Valley. Gabrielle Mallozzi led De Soto with a second-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle.
Thunder tumble against Saints, 3-0

The St. James Academy girls soccer team was already extremely familiar with St. Thomas Aquinas, but the Thunder have seen a lot of the Saints after playing them Friday night for the second time in six days. After falling to Aquinas in the third-place match of the Bob Durig MO-KAN Challenge on April 1, the Thunder tumbled against the Saints again, 3-0, in Friday’s Pink Out game.
SJA softball swept by Aquinas in long-awaited season opener

Inclement weather wreaked havoc on several area spring sports teams’ schedules over the past two weeks — especially the St. James Academy and St. Thomas Aquinas softball squads. Both teams took the field full of excitement for their respective, long-awaited season openers on Friday. It was Aquinas that came away in an even better mood after sweeping St. James, 8-4 and 5-1, in its Pink Out doubleheader. Page Mindedahl had an RBI single in each game for the Thunder.
St. James golf teams up with Aquinas to win inaugural Kansas Catholic Cup

One of St. James Academy’s biggest rivals helped the Thunder boys golf team come away with a win on Saturday at Emporia Golf Course. In the inaugural Kansas Catholic Cup, St. James and St. Thomas Aquinas topped Kapaun Mt. Carmel and Bishop Carroll, 9 1/2 to 7 1/2.

Shawnee Mission Northwest pitcher Nic Chitwood needed just 31 pitches to throw three no-hit innings in the Cougars’ 17-0 run-rule victory over Lawrence High on Saturday at LHS. Alex Rice and Jake Snider both went 2-for-4 with four RBIs.
