Mill Valley’s Talley, De Soto’s Kellner enjoy experience of Simone Awards ceremony

Mill Valley junior wide receiver Logan Talley and De Soto right tackle Marshall Kellner didn’t receive any hardware at Tuesday’s Thomas A. Simone Awards ceremony at Park Hill, but they both cherished the honor of being selected to be there. Talley was one of four finalists for the Otis Taylor Award, which goes to the best wide receiver/tight end in the Kansas City area. Kellner was a finalist for the Bobby Bell Award, which is given to the top lineman/linebacker for small class schools in the metro.

The Shawnee Mission Northwest boys swim and dive team won seven of the 12 events in its season-opening dual against Olathe North to top the Eagles, 654-577. Benny Alpert and Scott Klein each won two individual events to lead the Cougars. Shawnee Mission North opened its season with a double-dual on Monday at SM East. The Indians defeated Olathe South, 329-297, and fell to SM East, 318.5-290.5. Freshman Caleb Sostarich led SM North with a first-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:13.55. Sostarich also helped the Indians to first place in the 200-yard medley relay. Clayton McMillan, Trey Smith and James Cameron teamed up with Sostarich to post a time of 1:47.81.
Basketball roundup: Mill Valley, De Soto boys earn first-round wins in Huhtamaki Hardwood Classic

The Mill Valley and De Soto boys basketball teams both earned first-round victories in the Huhtamaki Hardwood Classic on Tuesday at De Soto. The Jaguars rolled to a 63-31 victory over Excelsior Springs, while the Wildcats edged Pleasant Hill, 47-42. The St. James boys basketball team fell to Shawnee Mission West, 54-51, in the first round of the Championship Showdown at SM East.
Stifling defense helps St. James power past Eudora

The St. James Academy girls basketball team picked up its first win under new coach Samantha O’Malley in a 45-28 victory over Eudora on Tuesday in the consolation semifinals of the Paola tournament. Senior Claire Kearney and freshmen Abby Dunsmore and Claire Worthington scored nine points apiece to lead the Thunder.
