Basketball roundup: Mill Valley, De Soto, Maranatha girls win

The Mill Valley, De Soto and Maranatha Christian Academy girls basketball teams all won on Tuesday to highlight hoops action in the Shawnee area. Mill Valley won a double-overtime thriller against Blue Valley Northwest, De Soto rolled to a 25-point win over Eudora and Maranatha held off Heritage Christian for its second straight victory.
SM North boys tame Lawrence High, 59-55

The overall record of the Shawnee Mission North basketball team has had several of its Sunflower League foes scratching their heads of late, and it was no different for the No. 9-ranked Lions of Lawrence High on Tuesday in the Brick House. The Indians trailed or were tied with the Lions for the first three quarters, but led for the bulk of the fourth en route to a 59-55 victory. Senior Danny Bradley Jr. fueled the Indians’ comeback with a game-high 21 points, while sophomore Jarrett Hensley and senior Avante Williams added 14 and 12, respectively.
SM North girls fall to Lawrence High, 51-39

With only having one player who logged regular varsity minutes off of the bench back from last season, Shawnee Mission North girls basketball coach Brian McIntosh figured that his team would have a great deal of growing pains in the 2016-17 campaign. The Indians have struggled to get into the win column after a 3-2 start, but games like Tuesday’s 51-39 loss to No. 9-ranked Lawrence High have given McIntosh reason to believe that his team has gained from the growing pains.

At her State of the City address, Mayor Michelle Distler said Shawnee has seen a lot of development over the past year, but the city still holds a lot of potential.
