While there is still some construction work to be done, the Mill Valley baseball team enjoyed playing a few games at its on-campus stadium last season. Mill Valley coach Jeff Strickland has spent a good portion of his free time building the stadium over the past seven years, and is glad that his players have a field to call their own.
Shawnee area soccer players selected to all-state team

Fourteen area soccer players were named to the Kansas Soccer Coaches Association’s all-state soccer team Thursday. First-team all-state selections included Mill Valley’s Haley Freeman and Kacie Kinley and Maranatha Christian Academy’s Kayla Crowder. Mill Valley’s Cori Carver; Maranatha’s Mallory Borgan and Anita Eckhardt; Shawnee Mission Northwest’s Megan Nugent and Kara Knapp and De Soto’s Aly Hargrove, Tarah Phongsavath, Carmen Rush, Taylor Rogers, Madison Plake and Tanith Beal were selected to the all-state second team.
SMNW, SMN fill coaching vacancies

Shawnee Mission Northwest and SM North have filled both of their head coach openings that were open at the beginning of the summer. Softball coach Anthony Kinney and swimming coach David Pfortmiller both stepped down at the end of the 2016-17 school year, and they are respectively being replaced at Northwest by Amy Schneider and Ryan Lee. Former Shawnee Heights girls basketball coach Amanda McNeill will move into the same position at SM North after Brian McIntosh resigned and took over the program at Wamego. The other head coaching changes took place in the SM North tennis program, as assistant coaches Elise Kurtz and Jon Durham were promoted to respectively take the helm of the girls and boys teams from Zach McKamie, who resigned last spring.
