Basketball roundup: SMNW girls top SM East to reach sub-state title game

Shawnee Mission Northwest junior Jordann Nachbar netted a game-high 21 points, and Hannah Black and Gena Ojeda added 13 and 11, respectively, to help the Cougars coast to a 64-32 victory over SM East on Thursday in the Class 6A sub-state semifinals. The Cougars will play Olathe Northwest on Saturday with a trip to state on the line. Shawnee Mission North’s girls team ended its season with a 42-24 loss to Olathe Northwest, and the Mill Valley boys squad closed its 2016-17 campaign with a 62-40 loss to St. Thomas Aquinas.
St. James handles De Soto, turns attention to Aquinas for sub-state title game

When the sub-state brackets were released, it was difficult for the players on the St. James Academy boys basketball team not to look ahead at a possible match-up with rival St. Thomas Aquinas on Saturday for a chance to move on to the Class 5A state basketball tournament. However, St. James coach Stan Dohm made it clear to his players that they still had to take care of business on Thursday against De Soto in the sub-state semifinals. The Thunder answered their coach’s call, as they coasted to a 71-30 victory over the Wildcats to set up the highly-anticipated sub-state title game against the Saints.
De Soto boys bowling trio places in top 20 at state; MV boys 10th, girls 12th

The De Soto boys bowling trio of Sean Cauthron (ninth), Danny Erickson (12th) and Tyler Lovegren (16th) had a dynamic finish to the season on Thursday, as they all placed in the top 20 of the Class 5-1A state tournament at Northrock Lanes. Mill Valley’s boys team placed 10th overall, while the Jaguar girls squad took 12th. St. James’ Meredith Bierbaum placed 47th in the girls tournament.
