Mill Valley’s upset bid falls short in 46-34 loss to Aquinas

The Mill Valley girls basketball team put St. Thomas Aquinas’ 22-year streak of going to the state tournament in serious jeopardy in the Class 5A sub-state championship game on Friday, but the Jaguars did not quite have enough in the second half of its 46-34 loss to the Saints. Claire Kaifes led Mill Valley with nine points, and the Jaguars ended the season with a record of 11-11.
Basketball roundup: De Soto girls state-bound after win over Pittsburg

In its first season as a member of Class 5A, the De Soto girls basketball qualified for the state tournament after defeating Pittsburg, 45-34, in the sub-state championship game on Friday. Tanith Beal led the Wildcats with 17 points. The Wildcats (15-7) will be the No. 8 seed in the 5A state tournament, and will play either St. Thomas Aquinas, Leavenworth, Maize or Schlagle — all of which own a record of 19-3 — in the first round. The state brackets will officially be released at 10 a.m. Sunday. Maranatha Christian Academy ended its season with a 61-29 loss to Jefferson County North in the 2A girls sub-state semifinals.
SMNW girls seventh, boys ninth at 6A state bowling

The Shawnee Mission Northwest girls and boys bowling teams placed seventh and ninth, respectively, at the Class 6A state tournament on Friday at Northrock Lanes.
