SMNW boys win seventh meet to claim regional title; SMN boys 2nd

Shawnee Mission Northwest track and field coach Mike Cooper has been around his fair share of talent during his tenure at his alma mater, but this year’s boys team has achieved a feat that even his state championship squads of 2002, 2011 and 2012 did not accomplish. With Friday’s 6A regional championship at SM North, the SM Northwest boys team won its seventh meet of the season after posting first-place finishes in seven different events. The SM North boys squad also went home with a plaque after taking second at the regional meet. The Cougars tied for fourth place on the girls side, while the Indians took seventh.
Brownlee, Webb lead Maranatha at regional track and field meet

Maranatha Christian Academy senior Brooke Brownlee won the 100 and 200-meter dashes to lead the way for the Eagles at the Class 2A regional track and field meet on Thursday at Winchester-Jefferson County North. Maranatha senior Micah Webb completed the Eagles’ sweep of the 100 meters after clocking in with a time of 11.47.

Shawnee Mission Northwest’s girls soccer team ended its season with a 2-1 loss to Olathe Northwest on Friday in the Class 6A regional championship match. Alix Willming found the back of the net for the Cougars. The best girls soccer season in Maranatha Christian Academy’s history ended on Thursday with a 5-1 loss to defending 4-1A state champion Bishop Miege in the regional championship match. Debra Zuniga scored on an assist from Kayla Crowder.
Mill Valley soccer closes season with regional final loss to Aquinas

Mill Valley soccer coach Arlan Vomhof wasn’t quite sure how the Jaguars’ season would go with only having two seniors and a sophomore goalkeeper, but after their 2017 campaign came to a close with a 4-0 regional final loss to St. Thomas Aquinas on Thursday, he still walked away with a big sense of accomplishment.
De Soto soccer suffers first loss against Shawnee Heights in regional title match

The De Soto girls soccer team’s dream of an unbeaten season came to a screeching halt in three nightmarish minutes in the Class 5A regional championship on Thursday against Shawnee Heights. The Thunderbirds scored in the 21st and 23rd minutes — their lone two shots on goal — and the Wildcats weren’t able to fully recover in a 2-1 season-ending loss. Mackenzie Mohl scored 30 seconds into the second half, but the Wildcats were never able to find an equalizer.
