Two Shawnee area football players announced as semifinalists for Thomas A. Simone Awards

Mill Valley junior Logan Talley and De Soto senior Marshall Kellner have played key roles in getting their respective teams to the state semifinals, and they received some recognition for it on Tuesday with being named as semifinalists for two of the highly-regarded Thomas A. Simone awards. Talley and Kellner were respectively selected as semifinalists for the Otis Taylor Award and Bobby Bell Award, which were released on PrepsKC’s YouTube channel. The list of 10 semifinalists for the Otis Taylor Award, Bobby Bell Award, Buck Buchanan Award, Frank Fontana Award and Simone Award will be trimmed to four on Nov. 28. The winners will then be announced on Dec. 5 at the high school of the Simone Award winner.
Area volleyball players earn all-state, all-league honors

St. James Academy senior Allison Coens was selected as the Class 5A Player of the Year by the Kansas Volleyball Association and was named the Eastern Kansas League Player of the Year to highlight the all-state and all-league volleyball honors from the Shawnee area. St. James’ Nancy Dorsey was also named the 5A Coach of the Year after guiding the Thunder to their eighth state title in the last 11 years. Shawnee Police are seeking Jaime Merino-Hernandez, after a 50-year-old Overland Park man was found dead in a crashed vehicle on October 7th.

At its meeting Monday evening, the Shawnee City Council approved the establishment of redevelopment district which will make a $110 million mixed use project eligible for tax increment financing.
