- After not being able to be on the court with his teammates for the second half of his junior year, Mill Valley standout guard Cooper Kaifes has been champing at the bit to lead the Jaguar boys basketball team this season. While Kaifes was sidelined with a broken foot, his teammates went through some growing pains. Now that Kaifes is healthy and a bulk of last year’s varsity squad is returning, the senior guard believes that the Jaguars will get back on track following a 4-17 season.

- After being a junior on a senior-laden Shawnee Mission Northwest boys basketball team last season, the roles have reversed for C.C. Ghilardi going into his final go-around with the Cougars. Ghilardi was still one of the Cougars’ top offensive threats during the 2016-17 campaign, and he’s excited to lead a young group of SM Northwest players this season.

- Shawnee Mission North junior Jarrett Hensley is all that remains when it comes to players who had significant playing time on the Indians’ 2015-16 Class 6A state championship boys basketball team. While Hensley has the most varsity experience as a junior, he’s done his best to instill a championship mind-set into his teammates.

- The St. James Academy boys basketball team will have a much different look to it this season after losing all five starters from its 2016-17 campaign. The Thunder will still have two veteran guards back to lead the way between junior David Hornung and senior Josh Spradlin, and they’ve liked what they’ve seen out from the plethora of varsity newcomers.

- The De Soto boys basketball team had a hard time breaking out of a midseason funk last year, but coach Matt Rice liked what his saw from his young squad toward the end of the regular season. The Wildcats won their last two games of the 2016-17 regular season, and have returned as a much more confident squad this year.
