Football roundup: Miege hands De Soto first loss; 5A, 6A playoffs set

In a matchup of the two top-ranked teams in Class 4A-I, No. 1 Bishop Miege shut out No. 2 De Soto, 31-0, on Friday. Olathe North edged Shawnee Mission Northwest, 26-22, in the battle for the No. 3 seed in the east of the Class 6A playoffs. Northwest will play Olathe South at 7 p.m. Friday at SM North in the first round of the playoffs. Maranatha returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown, but could not slow down Maur Hill Prep in a 51-12 loss. Shawnee Mission North suffered a 55-0 loss to Olathe South to end its regular season. The Indians will travel to Blue Valley North at 7 p.m. Friday for the first round of the 6A playoffs. In the 5A playoffs, St. James will take on Lansing in the first round, while Mill Valley will travel to Topeka Seaman. Both kickoffs are set for 7 p.m. Friday.
Mill Valley O-line helps Young to big second half in 35-21 win over Gardner-Edgerton

After leading the Eastern Kansas League in rushing last year, the yards haven’t come quite as easy for Mill Valley junior Cameron Young this season. But just like any top-tier running back, Young has remained patient as the Jaguar offensive line has continued to gel after losing four starters from last year. Young’s big night finally came on Friday, as his three second-half touchdowns fueled the Jaguars to a 35-21 win over Gardner-Edgerton.
