SMNW gymnastics third at state meet

Shawnee Mission Northwest placed third at the state gymnastics meet on Saturday at Olathe East. Senior Hallie Ross finished third in the all around to lead the Cougars. De Soto freshman Molly Stack became the first gymnast in school history to compete at the state meet. Shawnee Mission North senior Kiersten Preckel and freshman Riley Hilton joined Stack as individual state qualifiers.
St. James volleyball state-bound

The St. James volleyball team swept Turner and Mill Valley on Saturday at the Class 5A sub-state tournament in Pittsburg to clinch a trip to state. St. James (34-6) is the No. 3 seed for the state tournament, which will start with pool play on Friday at the Kansas Expocentre in Topeka. The Thunder will play Bishop Carroll at 8:30 a.m., St. Thomas Aquinas (25-13) at 10:30 a.m. and Newton (36-6) at 1:30 p.m. St. James has reached the state championship match in 10 consecutive seasons.
SJA girls XC wins regional title; MV boys, girls second

The St. James and Mill Valley girls cross country teams both placed four runners in the top 10 to finish first and second, respectively, at the Class 5A regional meet on Saturday at Blue Valley Southwest. The Mill Valley boys squad also qualified for state after its second-place finish. St. James’ Jack Moore, Charlie Wallace and John Matulis and De Soto’s Sam Hubert, Andre VanMeerhaeghe and Jordan Zade all qualified for state individually. Shawnee Mission North swept Saturday’s 6A regional at Johnson County Community College. Shawnee Mission Northwest’s boys team was the regional runner-up, and Amy Kowalczewski and Riley Demo qualified for state individually. More will be posted later at shawneedispatch.com on the 6A regional. Maranatha’s Savannah Shiner qualified for the 2A state meet in Wamego.
