St. James volleyball wins Class 5A state crown

The St. James Academy volleyball team won its eighth state title in the last 11 years on Saturday at the Kansas Expocentre. The Thunder won each match in straight sets. In pool play, St. James defeated Bishop Carroll, 25-10, 25-12; St. Thomas Aquinas, 25-19, 25-15, and Newton, 25-18, 25-17, on Friday. The Thunder then upended Goddard, 25-20, 25-18, in the semifinals and Aquinas, 25-18, 25-17, for the championship on Saturday. Allison Coens, Ellie Bolton and Morgan Miller were named to the all-state tournament team.

Maranatha’s Shiner 29th in 2A girls state cross country race

Maranatha Christian Academy senior Savannah Shiner rounded out her high school cross country career with a 29th-place finish in the Class 2A girls race of the state meet on Saturday at Wamego Country Club. Shiner finished with a time of 22:33.4.

Shawnee Mission North’s girls cross country team won a Class 6A state championship on Saturday at Rim Rock Farm in Lawrence. Katie Kasunic placed fifth to lead the Indians, who had all seven runners finish in the top 40. The SM North boys team placed fourth behind a fourth-place finish from Logan Jiskra. The SM Northwest boys squad finished sixth with Luke Sabus leading the way in 17th place.
St. James wins 5A girls XC title; Mill Valley earns two state runner-up plaques

The St. James Academy girls cross country team won its first state title in school history on Saturday at Rim Rock Farm. St. James edged Mill Valley by five points for first place. Sophomore Sarah Murrow was the state runner-up for St. James, while junior Delaney Kemp finished fifth for Mill Valley. The Mill Valley boys team matched the performance by the Jaguar girls squad. The Jaguars finished 11 points behind St. Thomas Aquinas to earn state runner-up honors in the boys race. St. James junior Jack Moore and De Soto junior Sam Hubert placed third and 11th, respectively, to lead the individual state qualifiers from the Shawnee area in the boys race.
