Girls hoops roundup: SMNW tops SMS for third straight win; MV surges past SJA for sixth consecutive victory
The Shawnee Mission Northwest girls basketball team won for seventh time in its last eight games after garnering a 46-30 win over SM South on Friday.
The Cougars (9-5, No. 9 in 6A) completed the regular season sweep of the Raiders (5-9). Northwest earned 55-46 road win over South on Dec. 12.
The Cougars will try to push their winning streak to four games at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday when they play host to Olathe North (4-9).
Mill Valley 52, St. James 41
Mill Valley went on an 8-0 run over the last 2:07 of the third quarter after St. James had pulled within three, and kept the Thunder at bay in the fourth to earn a 52-41 victory.
Claire Kaifes led the Jaguars with 17 points. Presley Barton scored nine of her 12 points in the second quarter to join Kaifes in double figures.
Brianna Streeter knocked down four 3-pointers to lead the Thunder with 12 points. Mary Goetz and Torri Kempf added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The Jaguars (14-2, No. 2 in 5A) won their sixth straight game and swept the regular season series over the Thunder (4-10).
Next up for the Jaguars is a No. 1 vs. No. 2 showdown against St. Thomas Aquinas (13-2, No. 1 in 5A) at 6 p.m. Friday at Mill Valley. St. James will be back in action at 6 p.m. Monday for a home tilt with Blue Valley West (6-8).

Spring Hill 50, De Soto 36
De Soto was unable to keep pace with Spring Hill as the Broncos pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 50-36 victory.
The Wildcats (10-5, No. 7 in 5A) trailed, 34-28, after three quarters, but the Broncos (9-6) outscored De Soto, 18-8, in the fourth.
De Soto will try to bounce back from back-to-back losses against Ottawa (2-12) at 6 p.m. Tuesday at DHS. The Wildcats defeated the Cyclones, 54-26, on Dec. 15.
Pleasant Ridge 60, Maranatha 42
Maranatha Christian Academy only trailed by four points at halftime and after three quarters, but Pleasant Ridge extended its lead in the fourth en route to a 60-42 win over the Eagles.
Maranatha (4-10) lost both of its regular season games against Pleasant Ridge (9-6). The Eagles fell to the Rams, 60-28, on Jan. 12.
The Eagles will try to snap a three-game winning streak when they travel to Oskaloosa (4-9) at 6:30 p.m. Monday. Maranatha will try to avenge a 49-25 loss to Oskaloosa from back on Jan. 9.
SM West 55, SM North 32
Shawnee Mission North's attempt at a third straight win fell short in a 55-32 loss to SM West.
The Indians (4-10) were unable to recover from a 36-12 halftime deficit. The Vikings (8-6) won for the sixth time in their last eight games.
North will try to get back in the win column against Olathe Northwest (11-3, No. 4 in 6A) at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at SMN.
