Grapplin’ girls: SMNW’s Brooks, Dugan gear up for girls wrestling state tournament

Each time Shawnee Mission Northwest senior Dominique Brooks put on her wrestling singlet over the past four years, it’s been at a dual or tournament that has mainly consisted of male wrestlers. That will finally change for Brooks and her teammate, junior Whitney Dugan. The SM Northwest girls grapplers will represent the Cougars at the second-annual girls state wrestling tournament on Saturday in McPherson. While the tournament is not sanctioned by the Kansas State High School Activities Association, Brooks and Dugan are just excited for the opportunity to wrestle at an all-girls tournament.

School records fall for SMN, SMNW at Sunflower League swim and dive meet

The Shawnee Mission North 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relay teams, SM North senior Clayton McMillin and SM Northwest sophomore Scott Klein all broke school records at the Sunflower League boys swim and dive meet at Prairie Trail Middle School. All four school records fell in Friday’s prelims, and helped put the Indians and Cougars in position to place seventh and 11th, respectively, on Saturday in the final team standings. Shawnee Mission East won the meet.

The Shawnee Mission Northwest and SM North wrestling teams placed second and fourth, respectively, at the Shawnee Mission District Duals on Friday at SM North. Shawnee Mission West won the district title.
