School records fall for SMN, SMNW at Sunflower League swim and dive meet

The Shawnee Mission North 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relay teams, SM North senior Clayton McMillin and SM Northwest sophomore Scott Klein all broke school records at the Sunflower League boys swim and dive meet at Prairie Trail Middle School.

All four school records fell in Friday's prelims, and helped put the Indians and Cougars in position to place seventh and 11th, respectively, on Saturday in the final team standings. Shawnee Mission East won the meet.

Shawnee Mission North's James Cameron, Luke Guthrie, Trey Smith and Clayton McMillin were league runners-up in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:32.30. The Indians set the school record with a time of 1:32.11 in the prelims.

Caleb Sostarich joined McMillin, Smith and Cameron to break the Indians' school record in the 200-yard medley relay. The Indians posted a

third-place time of 1:43.22 in the finals after — just .06 seconds off of their time from the prelims. Guthrie, Sostarich, Rowan Jones and Ike Diggs rounded out the meet with a time of 3:41.51 in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

McMillin already had SM North's school record in the 100-yard breaststroke going into the league meet, but lowered the mark in prelims with a time of 1:01.86. The SM North senior swam to a fourth-place time of 1:02.79 in the finals. Sostarich tied for 11th with a time of 1:07.23.

McMillin was also one of three SM North swimmers to qualify for finals in the 100-yard freestyle. McMillin (seventh place, time of 50.82 seconds), Cameron (11th, 52.82) and Guthrie (16th, 53.48) showcased SM North's depth in the event. Cameron and Guthrie also finished 11th and 12th with respective times of 23.55 and 23.59 in the 50-yard freestyle.

Smith garnered two top-12 individual performances after finishing eighth in the 100-yard butterfly and 12th in the 200-yard freestyle with respective times of 56.73 and 1:57.78.

Ryan Taylor highlighted the 1-meter dive competition for the Indians with a score of 312.45, which was good for 11th place.

Klein broke a 19-year SM Northwest school record in the 50-yard freestyle when he clocked in at 21.86 in the prelims. The SM Northwest sophomore came back on Saturday to win the final heat with a time of 21.87. Ben Harrell followed in 15th at 24.18. Klein also took fourth in the 100-yard freestyle after touching the final wall in 49.55.

Jaden Karnes added a fourth-place finish in the 1-meter dive after posting a score of 392.70.

The Cougars had two top-10 finishes from their relays. Eric Gonzalez and Matt Nolan joined Klein and Harrell to help the Cougars to a ninth-place time of 3:35.92 in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Nolan was also on the Cougars' 200-yard freestyle relay with Will Gross, Benny Alpert and Henry Tomasic. The Cougars finished with a time of 1:42.71.
