Boys basketball roundup: Maranatha, SM North, De Soto pick up wins
Maranatha Christian Academy coasted past Oskaloosa, Shawnee Mission North held off Olathe Northwest and De Soto edged Ottawa to highlight boys basketball action the past two days in the Shawnee area.
Mitchell Peacher knocked down 7 of his 9 shots from behind the arc for 21 points to lead Maranatha to a 79-38 win over Oskaloosa on Monday.
Jonathan Jackson (18 points, 20 rebounds) and Jason Friesen (13 points, 12 rebounds) both had double-doubles. Roland Hou also scored in double figures with 11 points and added eight rebounds. The Eagles grabbed 54 rebounds as a team.
The Eagles (12-2, No. 6 in Class 2A) have won nine straight games entering their road tilt at 8 p.m. Friday against Butler (3-18). Maranatha completed the regular season sweep of Oskaloosa (1-14). The Eagles broke Maranatha's single-game scoring record in their 89-21 win over the Bears on Jan. 9.
Shawnee Mission North got back into the win column after its 70-64 victory over Olathe Northwest.
The Indians (8-7) took a 48-37 lead going into the fourth quarter before fending off the Ravens (11-4, No. 3 in 6A) down the stretch.
North will try to extend its home winning streak to four games at 7 p.m. Friday against Gardner-Edgerton (6-9).
De Soto earned its third straight victory after defeating Ottawa, 50-44.
De Soto (9-7) and Ottawa (8-6, No. 10 in 4A-I) were deadlocked at 27-27 at halftime before the Wildcats outscored the Cyclones, 12-4, in the third quarter. Levi Hansen led the Wildcats with 10 points, as De Soto avenged a 52-39 loss to Ottawa from Dec. 15.
The Wildcats will go for their fourth consecutive win at 7:30 p.m. Friday when they play host to Paola (7-8). De Soto topped Paola, 55-49, on Jan. 2.
SMNW stumbles late against Olathe North; St. James falls to BV West
Shawnee Mission Northwest and St. James were unable to build off of their respective wins on Friday. The Cougars suffered a 64-49 loss to Olathe North, while St. James was upended by Blue Valley West, 58-40.
Northwest held a 36-30 lead at the 3:55 mark of the third quarter after back-to-back 3-pointers from Logan Skeens capped a 13-0 run, but the Cougars were outscored 34-13 the rest of the way. Tymer Jackson scored 15 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter for the Eagles.
C.C. Ghilardi scored seven of his team-high 12 points in the first quarter for the Cougars.
Northwest (7-8) will try to bounce back at 7 p.m. Friday at Leavenworth (4-11). A full recap of the Cougars' loss to the Eagles will be posted later on shawneedispatch.com.
St. James (4-11) fell to BV West (6-10) for the second time in two weeks. The Jaguars also defeated the Thunder, 45-31, on Jan. 24.
The Thunder will go up against Bishop Miege (13-2, No. 1 in 4A-I) at 8 p.m. Friday. The Stags rallied past the Thunder in the fourth quarter for a 56-44 victory on Jan. 9.
