Girls basketball roundup: SMNW upends Olathe North; De Soto ousts Ottawa
The Shawnee Mission Northwest and De Soto girls basketball teams both earned double-digit victories on Tuesday.
The Cougars made quick work of Olathe North, 57-28, en route to their fourth consecutive victory. Northwest (10-5, No. 8 in 6A) has held its last four opponents to 32 points or less.
Rachel Seibold scored 14 points to lead the Cougars. D'Asya Collier-Williams joined Seibold in double figures with 13. Leyanna McGinnis paced the Eagles (4-10) with 12 points.
The Cougars will try to push their winning streak to five games at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Leavenworth (8-6).
De Soto seized control early in its 41-30 win over Ottawa.
The Wildcats (11-5) jumped out to a 17-7 lead in the first quarter against the Cyclones (2-13). De Soto completed the season sweep of Ottawa. The Wildcats also defeated the Cyclones, 54-26, on Dec. 15.
LaMyah Ricks led the Wildcats with 12 points. Mackenzie Shupe added 10.
The Wildcats will go for another season sweep when they play host to Paola (5-10) at 6 p.m. Friday. De Soto upended Paola, 53-48, on Jan. 2.
St. James, Maranatha, SM North suffer setbacks
St. James fell to Blue Valley West and Maranatha came up short against Oskaloosa on Monday, while Shawnee Mission North lost to Olathe Northwest on Tuesday.
The Thunder fell to the Jaguars, 58-52. St. James (4-11) was unable to slow down Brooke Lansford, who scored 27 points. The Jaguars won their third straight game to move back to .500 at 8-8.
St. James will be back in action at 6:30 p.m. Friday against Bishop Miege (14-2, No. 1 in 4A-I) at SJA. The Stags defeated the Thunder, 59-26, on Jan. 9.
Maranatha suffered a 51-31 loss at the hands of Oskaloosa. The Bears (6-10) completed the season sweep of the Eagles (4-10). Oskaloosa also defeated Maranatha, 49-25, on Jan. 9.
The Eagles will try to snap their four-game losing streak at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Butler (14-6).
Shawnee Mission North was handed a 62-32 loss at the hands of Olathe Northwest. The Indians fell to 4-11, while the Ravens (No. 6 in 6A) moved to 12-3.
North will play next at 5:30 p.m. Friday against Gardner-Edgerton (10-5) at the Brick House.
