SMNW girls, Morrison win SMSD bowling titles
The Shawnee Mission Northwest girls bowling team won the SMSD district meet on Thursday at College Lanes by a commanding 237 pins.
All six SM Northwest girls bowlers finished in the top 12 — including the trio of Alaina Burris, Hadley Sayers and Emilia Battles that took second through fourth, respectively. South's Nichole Thomas claimed the girls district title with a 658 series.
Burris said after the Cougars' senior night sweep on Tuesday at Park Lanes that her Sayers and Battles had a big surprise to unveil at the district meet. Their big surprise came in the form of skorts, and their fashion statement was further made with some of SM Northwest's best scores of the season.
After Burris and Sayers were neck-and-neck through the first two games on Tuesday, they were in the same position on Thursday but with much higher scores. Burris and Sayers both started out with two 200-plus games before Burris edged Sayers for third place in Game 3. Burris threw games of 234, 202 and 187, while Sayers posted scores of 209, 236 and 159.
Battles came on strong on the third game to finish fourth with a 519 series. The SM Northwest senior threw games of 135, 158 and 226.
Cheyanne Bolin (eighth place, 476 series), Emma Reinke (ninth, 468) and Charlie Queral (12th, 436) helped the Cougars wrap up their district championship.
Travis Morrison won a district title with a three-game series of 673 to lead the SM Northwest boys to third place. Morrison threw games of 182, 245 and 246 en route to being crowned as the district champion.
Clayton Engelby and Garrett Bolin joined Morrison in the top 10 with respective series of 614 and 592. Engelby also had two 200-plus games — 236 in Game 1 and 208 in Game 2 — to take sixth place. Bolin placed eighth after being the Cougars' most consistent bowlers with scores of 201, 196 and 195.
Ryan Gentry (13th, 553), Kyle Cunningham (21st, 518) and Austin Andersen (24th, 480) helped the Cougars to first place by 45 pins over SM West going into the four Baker games. The Cougars will surpassed by SM West and SM South in the Baker games. West won the boys district title with a final total of 3,248 to edge South by 23 pins. Northwest finished third with a team score of 3,178.
North and East rounded out the boys team standings with respective scores of 3,082 and 2,678. Cal Brooks and David Johnson both cracked the top five for the Indians. Brooks got better as the meet went on with scores of 185, 222 and 236 to finish with a third-place series of 643. Johnson followed in fifth with a 614 series after throwing games of 159, 230 and 225. The rest of the SM North squad consisted of Michael Rivera (12th, 566), James Denebeim (15th, 551), Jack Denebeim (22nd, 515) and Brandon Otoya (26th, 456).
Julia Hernandez led the SM North girls to third place after throwing a fifth-place series of 518. Hernandez was the Indians' most consistent bowlers with scores of 174, 183 and 161. Brianna Hubenett joined Hernandez in the top 10 with a seventh-place series of 478. Samantha Fricke (17th, 406), Crystal Call (19th, 404), Alexis Michalski (23rd, 383) and Jessica Nevins (25th, 359) rounded out the competitors for the Indians.
