Girls basketball roundup: Black hits game-winner to send SMNW past Leavenworth
Shawnee Mission Northwest junior Hannah Black knocked down a 3-pointer with 1.5 seconds remaining to lift the Cougars to a 40-39 win over Leavenworth on Friday.
Black's trey helped the Cougars to their fifth straight victory. The Cougars (11-5, No. 8 in 6A) will try to keep rolling at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Lawrence High (12-4, No. 10 in 6A). The Pioneers fell to 9-7.
Gardner Edgerton 42, SM North 40
Shawnee Mission North went down to the wire with Gardner Edgerton, but came up short, 42-40.
The Indians fell to 4-12, while the Trailblazers moved to 11-5.
North will try to snap a three-game losing streak at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at SM South (6-10).
Paola 42, De Soto 39
De Soto was unable to hold on to an eight-point halftime lead in a 42-39 loss to Paola.
Mackenzie Shupe scored 12 points to lead the Wildcats.
De Soto and Paola split the regular season series with both teams earning road victories. The Wildcats (11-6) began the second semester with a 53-48 win over the Panthers (6-10) on Jan. 2.
The Wildcats will play next at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Eudora (10-8). De Soto edged Eudora, 30-26, on Jan. 5.
Miege 52, St. James 31
St. James remained within striking distance for three quarters, but Bishop Miege pulled away in the fourth for a 52-31 victory.
The Thunder (4-12) battled back within five at 28-23 with two minutes left in the third before the Stags (15-2, No. 1 in 4A-I) broke the game open. The Stags defeated the Thunder, 59-26, on Jan. 9 to sweep the season series.
St. James will try to end its four-game losing streak at 7 p.m. Monday at Blue Valley North (13-4, No. 5 in 6A).
Butler 54, Maranatha 24
Maranatha couldn't keep pace with Butler in a 54-24 setback.
Maranatha suffered its fifth consecutive loss to fall to 4-11, while Butler improved to 16-6.
The Eagles will try to bounce back at 6 p.m. Tuesday when they play host to Heritage Christian (4-11).
Aquinas 47, Mill Valley 36
Mill Valley couldn't slow down St. Thomas Aquinas standout Sereena Weledji in the second half of its 47-36 loss to the Saints.
Weledji led all scorers with 21 points and sparked the Saints (15-2, No. 1 in 5A) during their 10-0 run to begin the second half.
Claire Kaifes paced Mill Valley (14-3, No. 2 in 5A) with 12 points.
The Jaguars will try to bounce back at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Blue Valley Northwest (6-9).
