SMNW’s Dugan 3rd, Brooks 9th at girls state wrestling
Shawnee Mission Northwest junior Whitney Dugan and senior Dominique Brooks represented the Cougars at the all-class girls state wrestling tournament on Saturday in McPherson.
Dugan placed third at 152 pounds with a record of 3-1. The SM Northwest junior pinned McPherson's Brittani Burgess and Wichita North's Yessica Gallardo while losing by fall against Fredonia's Mason Claibourn to reach the third-place match. Dugan won by fall over Nickerson's Kellie Edwards to take third.
Brooks posted a record of 2-3 to finish ninth out of 30 wrestlers at 106 pounds. All of Brooks' matches were also decided by fall. After losing by fall to Osawatomie's Amanda Newcomb and Topeka's Justina Nicholson to open the tournament, Brooks bounced back with a pin against Garden City's Chloe Sullivan. Brooks then was pinned by Goddard-Eisenhower's Breckyn Elliott before winning by fall over Riley County's Madyson Haidusek in the ninth-place match.
The top-10 finishes from Dugan and Brooks gave the Cougars a team score of 19 points, which was good for 31st out of 61 teams.
