Boys basketball roundup: Maranatha powers past Barstow; Mill Valley upends BV North

Maranatha and Mill Valley's boys basketball teams both earned victories on Friday night to round out the second-to-last week of the regular season.

Maranatha led wire to wire in its 57-42 win over Barstow. The Eagles stormed out of the gates with a 15-0 run in the first four minutes and 47 seconds. Barstow battled back within three in the early stages of the third quarter, but the Eagles answered with an 12-4 run to regain momentum. Jonathan Jackson (15 points), Jax Holland (14) and Brock West (11) led the way for the Eagles.

The Eagles (15-2, No. 5 in Class 2A) pushed their winning streak to 12 games with the victory over the Knights (14-10). A full recap of the Maranatha/Barstow showdown will be posted later on Maranatha will try to keep rolling at 7:30 p.m. Monday with a home tilt against Van Horn (8-13).

Mill Valley notched its first win of the season over a state-ranked opponent when the Jaguars took down Blue Valley North, 74-68. The Jaguars won for the fourth time in their last six games to improve to 8-10. The Mustangs (13-6, No. 4 in 6A) saw their four-game winning streak come to an end.

Next up for the Jaguars is their third game of the season against Blue Valley Southwest (5-14). The Jaguars and Timberwolves have split the first two matchups. Blue Valley Southwest defeated Mill Valley, 56-53 on Dec. 9 in the Huhtamaki Hardwood Classic third-place game at De Soto. Mill Valley rolled to a 67-41 win over BV Southwest on Jan. 30 at MVHS. The Jaguars will travel to BV Southwest at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

SM Northwest, SM North fall

Shawnee Mission Northwest and SM North lost their respective Sunflower League contests on Friday.

Northwest suffered a 54-46 loss at the hands of SM West. The Cougars (8-10) have lost three of their last four, while the Vikings (10-8, No. 10 in 6A) ended a three-game skid. Northwest will be back in action at 7 p.m. Tuesday against Free State (14-3, No. 2 in 6A) for its final home game of the regular season.

North couldn't keep pace with Free State in a 74-52 setback. Zach Nelson and Jarrett Hensley led the Indians with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Garrett Luinstra and Zach McDermott paced the Firebirds with 22 and 20 points, respectively. North (8-10) has dropped five of its last six games, while Free State extended its winning streak to eight and clinched at least a share of the Sunflower League title. The Indians will play host to Leavenworth (5-13) at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
