Girls basketball roundup: SMNW ousts Free State; DHS upends Louisburg; MCA stifles KCC
Shawnee Mission Northwest coasted past Free State for a 60-34 win on senior night.
Senior Megan Nugent, who has missed the entire season due to a knee injury, saw her first action of the 2017-18 campaign. Northwest coach Tyler Stewart worked out a deal with Free State coach Ted Juneau for Nugent to score the first points of the game right after the opening tip. The Cougars (13-6) then allowed the Firebirds (4-15) to tie it up on a layup by Erin Cushing before calling a timeout to sub out Nugent.
Senior Jordann Nachbar and junior Hannah Black paced the Cougars with 16 points apiece. A full recap of the Cougars' win over the Firebirds will be posted later on shawneedispatch.com.
The Cougars, who have won seven of their last eight games, will close out the regular season at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Gardner Edgerton (13-6).

The winner of Maranatha and Pleasanton will play the winner of Yates Center (14-5) and Uniontown (4-15) on Thursday in the semifinals at Pittsburg-St. Mary's Colgan.
