Girls basketball roundup: SMNW ousts Free State; DHS upends Louisburg; MCA stifles KCC
Shawnee Mission Northwest coasted past Free State for a 60-34 win on senior night.
Senior Megan Nugent, who has missed the entire season due to a knee injury, saw her first action of the 2017-18 campaign. Northwest coach Tyler Stewart worked out a deal with Free State coach Ted Juneau for Nugent to score the first points of the game right after the opening tip. The Cougars (13-6) then allowed the Firebirds (4-15) to tie it up on a layup by Erin Cushing before calling a timeout to sub out Nugent.
Senior Jordann Nachbar and junior Hannah Black paced the Cougars with 16 points apiece. A full recap of the Cougars' win over the Firebirds will be posted later on shawneedispatch.com.
The Cougars, who have won seven of their last eight games, will close out the regular season at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Gardner Edgerton (13-6).
De Soto completes season sweep of Louisburg
LaMyah Ricks and Mackenzie Shupe scored 20 and 12 points, respectively, to lead De Soto to a 55-38 win over Louisburg.

The Wildcats will end the regular season at 6 p.m. Friday at Baldwin (17-1, No. 1 in 4A-I). Baldwin beat De Soto, 58-45, on Jan. 30.
Maranatha powers past KC Christian
Maranatha snapped an eight-game losing streak with its 36-27 win over Kansas City Christian.
The Eagles trailed, 11-9, in a low-scoring first half before getting their offense going after the break. Maranatha (5-14) also completed the season sweep of KC Christian (2-17) with Wednesday's victory. The Eagles defeated the Panthers, 42-15, on Dec 15.
Maranatha also learned its first-round sub-state opponent on Wednesday. The sixth-seeded Eagles will travel to Pleasanton (12-6) at 7 p.m. Monday for a first-round matchup. The winner of Maranatha and Pleasanton will play the winner of Yates Center (14-5) and Uniontown (4-15) on Thursday in the semifinals at Pittsburg-St. Mary's Colgan. The other side of the bracket features sub-state host and top-seeded Colgan (15-4) against KC Christian (2-17) and Heritage Christian (6-12) and Oswego (4-14).
The Eagles will play their regular season finale at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Waverly (10-8).
SMN falls to Leavenworth
Shawnee Mission North jumped out to a four-point lead in the first quarter, but only scored two points in the second in a 57-45 loss to Leavenworth.
The Pioneers extended their lead from six to 13 in the third quarter, as the Indians' losing streak hit six games.
