The Shawnee Mission Northwest girls basketball team earned a 40-29 road win over Gardner Edgerton in its regular season finale.
Northwest (14-6) won eight of its final nine regular season games. The Cougars will open 6A sub-state action against Blue Valley Northwest (6-13) at 7 p.m. Tuesday at SMNW. The winner will go up against Olathe North (5-15) or Olathe Northwest (15-5, No. 8 in 6A) at 7 p.m. Friday.
Mill Valley 49, Blue Valley 41
Mill Valley rounded out the regular season with a 49-41 win over Blue Valley to earn the No. 2 overall seed in the 5A east sub-states.
All four of the Jaguars' losses in the regular season came against teams that are currently ranked No. 6 or higher in their respective classifications.
Mill Valley (16-4, No. 2 in 5A) will begin sub-state with a home tilt against Turner at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The winner will play either De Soto (12-8) or Blue Valley Southwest at 6 p.m. Saturday.
St. James 36, BV Northwest 32
St. James upended Blue Valley Northwest, 36-32, to close out the regular season as winners of two of its last three.
The Thunder (6-14) will travel to Topeka Seaman (13-7) at 7 p.m. Wednesday for a first-round 5A sub-state matchup. The winner will take on Washington (5-14) or Lansing (15-5, No. 8 in 5A) at 6 p.m. Saturday.
Baldwin 58, De Soto 39
De Soto roared out to an 18-point lead in the second quarter, but couldn't hold off Baldwin — the top-ranked team in Class 4A-II — in a 58-39 setback to the Bulldogs.
The Wildcats owned a 27-9 advantage, but the Bulldogs were able to whittle the deficit down to 11 by halftime. The Bulldogs kept on rolling with a 17-0 run to begin the third quarter and led the rest of the way. Baldwin (18-1) completed the season sweep of De Soto. The Bulldogs also defeated the Wildcats, 58-45, on Jan. 30.
Ellie Bream and Linnea Searls scored nine points apiece to lead the Wildcats. Carly Lindenmeyer poured in a game-high 17 points for the Bulldogs. A full recap of the Baldwin/De Soto game will be posted later on shawneedispatch.com.
De Soto (12-8) will play host to BV Southwest (8-12) in the Class 5A sub-state semifinals at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The winner will play either Turner (5-15) or Mill Valley (16-4, No. 2 in 5A) at 6 p.m. Saturday.
Waverly 42, Maranatha 32
Maranatha could not keep pace with Waverly in a 42-32 setback.
The Eagles started the season 4-6, but have lost nine of their last 10.
Maranatha will be the first area team to kick off sub-state play. The Eagles will hit the road to play Pleasanton (12-7) at 7 p.m. Monday. The winner will take on Uniontown (4-16) or Yates Center (14-5) on Thursday in the 2A sub-state semifinals at St. Mary's Colgan.
Olathe East 52, SM North 21
Shawnee Mission North's bid to break up Olathe East's perfect regular season came up short in a 52-21 loss to the Hawks.
Olathe East (20-0, No. 1 in 6A) picked up two regular season wins over SM North (4-16). The Indians also fell to the Hawks, 56-22, in the first round of the Glacier's Edge Invitational on Jan. 25 in Emporia.
The Indians will try to snap a seven-game losing streak at 7 p.m. Tuesday at BV North (15-5, No. 5 in 6A) in the first round of 6A sub-state action. The winner will play SM South (7-13) or Gardner Edgerton (13-7) at 7 p.m. Friday.
