Only 17 Shawnee Mission School District students have been recognized as finalists in the National Merit Program.
High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test during their sophomore year of high school.
These students now have the opportunity to advance in competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, worth about $32 million, that will be offered this spring.
This test serves as an initial screen of approximately 1.6 million entrants each year. Students must also meet published program entry and participation requirements.
The Shawnee area finalists are:
SM North: Raphaella Kim
SM Northwest: Cameron Akagi, Benjamin Basel and Rachel Tao
