Basketball roundup: Maranatha boys edge Jeff West; SMNW boys, MCA girls fall
The Maranatha Christian Academy boys basketball team won its third straight game after defeating Meriden Jefferson West, 53-50, in the first round of the McLouth tournament on Wednesday.
Jonathan Jackson and Roland Hou scored 16 and 12 points, respectively, to pace the Eagles. Maranatha was active on the defensive end with 14 steals. Jason Friesen was a defensive presence down low for the Eagles with three blocks.
The Eagles (6-2) will try to improve on its best start in school history when they take on Bishop Seabury (3-5) at 7:45 p.m. Friday in the semifinals of the McLouth tournament.
Riverside 54, Maranatha girls 49
The Maranatha girls squad fell to Riverside in its first-round game of the McLouth tournament, 54-49.
After trailing, 36-22, at halftime, the Eagles outscored Riverside, 18-5, in the third quarter to take a 41-40 lead into the fourth. The 49 points were a season-high for the Eagles, but it wasn't enough for their third season of the season.
Maranatha (2-6) will try to bounce back at 6:15 tonight against Independence Home School in the McLouth tournament.
Blue Springs South 69, Shawnee Mission Northwest boys 54
The Shawnee Mission Northwest boys basketball team suffered a 69-54 loss to Blue Springs South in its second pool play game of the Viking Classic at SM West.
The Cougars (4-6) fell in a 25-9 hole in the first quarter and weren't able to recover.
Northwest will play its third and final game in the Viking Classic at noon Saturday against Friday's winner between Wyandotte and Lansing.
