SJA 5th, MV 9th, DHS 12th at Timberwolf Invitational boys swim meet
The St. James Academy, Mill Valley and De Soto boys swim teams competed at the Timberwolf Invitational on Saturday at Blue Valley Southwest.
St. James finished fifth with 138 points. The Thunder posted second-place finishes in five different events. Harry Tjaden finished as the runner-up in the 100-yard butterfly and the 500-yard freestyle with respective times of 54.84 and 4:54.59 to lead the Thunder. Tjaden also teamed up with JT Amrein, Zach Kurland and Nick Callahan to help the Thunder take second in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:32.46. The same four swimmers finished fourth in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:45.27.
Amrein and Callahan both had two top-five finishes in their individual events. Amrein finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:02.42 and third in the 200-yard IM after clocking in at 2:04.13. Callahan placed second in the 50-yard freestyle and fourth in the 100-yard freestyle with respective times of 22.14 and 49.88.
Mill Valley came in ninth with 68 points. Chris Sprenger paced the Jaguars with two top-five finishes. Sprenger finished third in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:04.06 and fourth in the 200-yard IM at 2:04.31.
Ethan Forristal added top-10 performances in the same events after placing sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke and 10th in the 200-yard IM with respective times of 1:05.58 and 2:15.71.
Colby Beggs added a seventh-place time of 24.37 in the 50-yard freestyle to round out the top-10 individual event performances for the Jaguars. Beggs, Sprenger, Forristal and Cole McClure also placed sixth in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:49.27.
De Soto tied Olathe West for 12th with 14 points. The Wildcats' best finish came from the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Andre VanMeerhaeghe, Cale Marquis, Andrew Blazo and Eli Gratz. The De Soto 200-yard freestyle relay team placed 12th with a time of 1:47.92.
Cole Peterson, VanMeerhaeghe, Marquis and Gratz started out the meet with a 14th-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay after clocking in at 2:02.06. Peterson, Andrew Blazo, Jose Banuelos and Aydan VanMeerhaeghe ended the meet with a 17th-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 4:30.57.
Andre VanMeerhaeghe collected two top-20 finishes after placing 14th in the 100-yard breaststroke and 18th in the 200-yard freestyle with respective times of 1:14.07 and 2:34.20. Gratz and Banuelos added top-20 finishes in the 100-yard butterfly after placing 17th and 19th, respectively, with times of 1:04.60 and 1:07.84.
