Basketball roundup: Mill Valley girls win El Dorado Lady Cat Classic

The Mill Valley girls basketball team won its second regular season tournament after defeating Gardner-Edgerton, 48-45, in overtime on Saturday in the El Dorado Lady Cat Classic championship game. The Shawnee Mission Northwest girls basketball team held Ulysses to four first-half points en route to a 38-26 victory in the fifth-place game of the Mid America Classic McPherson Roundhouse tournament. Shawnee Mission North’s girls basketball team had its highest scoring game of the season in a 63-59 overtime win over Great Bend in the seventh-place game of the Glacier’s Edge Invitational in Emporia. St. James Academy’s boys basketball team came up short against Quincy Notre Dame, 48-46.
West powers Maranatha boys hoops past Bishop Ward

Maranatha Christian Academy sophomore Brock West was feeling it from 3-point range in the first quarter of the Eagles’ 79-47 win over Bishop Ward on Friday, but the 6-foot-1 guard has wanted to prove this season that he has much more to his game than a silky-smooth jump shot. After knocking down three 3-pointers in the first quarter, West showcased his ability to get to the rim for the rest of the night. The Maranatha sophomore poured in a game-high 27 points to lead the Eagles to their sixth straight victory.
Maranatha girls basketball falls to Bishop Ward despite big night from Friesen

Maranatha Christian Academy senior Maggie Friesen scored a game-high 30 points, but turnover woes were costly in the Eagles’ 60-53 loss to Bishop Ward on Friday.
Wrestling roundup: Mill Valley 2nd at SEK Invitational; SMNW’s Habben wins at Junction City Invitational

Zach Keal, Bryson Markovich and Jarrett Bendure won their respective weight class to guide the Mill Valley wrestling team to second place at the SEK Invitational on Saturday in Chanute. Shawnee Mission Northwest senior Jerad Habben won all three of his matches by fall to win the 132-pound weight class at the Junction City Invitational. De Soto’s Evan Werner went 2-2 record to earn a fifth-place finish in the 126-pound bracket. St. James sophomore Cade Lautt finished second in the 182-pound weight class to pace the Thunder at the Rocky Welton Invitational. Shawnee Mission North senior Tanner Willmon placed fourth in the 195-pound weight class to lead the Indians at the Shawnee Mission North Invitational.
