Boys hoops roundup: MV, DHS, SMNW, MCA earn victories
The Mill Valley, De Soto, SM Northwest and Maranatha Christian Academy boys basketball teams were all victorious on Tuesday.
Mill Valley 67, Blue Valley Southwest 41
Mill Valley won for the third time in the last four games after defeating Blue Valley Southwest, 67-41. The Jaguars have scored at least 67 points in all three victories during the four-game stretch.
Mill Valley (6-8) avenged a 56-53 loss to BV Southwest (5-9) from Dec. 9 in the third-place game of the Huhtamaki Hardwood Classic at De Soto. The rubber match between the Jaguars and Timberwolves is set for Feb. 20 at BV Southwest.
The Jaguars will try to complete a regular season sweep of St. James (3-10) at 7:45 p.m. Friday at SJA. Mill Valley edged St. James, 43-41, on Jan. 3 at MV.
De Soto 71, Baldwin 61
De Soto got back to the .500 mark with a 71-61 win over Baldwin. The Wildcats jumped out to a 19-8 lead in the first quarter to set the pace early.
Brannon Bell led the Wildcats (7-7) with 20 points. Jared Baruth and Exavier Jackson joined Bell in double figures with 17 and 12 points, respectively. The Bulldogs fell to 6-8 with the loss.
Next up for De Soto is a road tilt against Spring Hill (7-5) at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Shawnee Mission Northwest 51, Olathe South 46
Shawnee Mission Northwest won its second straight game after outlasting Olathe South, 51-46.
After taking a 24-23 lead into the locker room, the Cougars used an 11-0 run to close out the third quarter to push their advantage to 10 points at 40-30. Olathe South (5-7) cut the deficit in half with a 5-0 spurt to begin the fourth and pulled within one at 46-45, but SM Northwest (6-7) never relinquished the lead.
The Cougars will try to get back to .500 when they play host to SM South (8-5) at 7 p.m. Friday.
Maranatha 57, Sherwood 53
Maranatha Christian Academy extended its winning streak to seven games with a 57-53 victory over Sherwood.
Jonathan Jackson had a double-double with 14 points and 18 rebounds. Jason Friesen led the Eagles with 16 points and added eight rebounds. The Eagles (10-2, No. 10 in 2A) struggled shooting it from long distance — making just 6 of their 24 3-pointers — but relied on their defense down the stretch against Sherwood (11-5).
Maranatha will take on Pleasant Ridge (7-7) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at MCA. The Eagles defeated the Rams, 82-46, on Jan. 12 in their first meeting.
Olathe West 71, Shawnee Mission North 53
Shawnee Mission North owned a one-point lead after three quarters, but fell Olathe West, 71-53.
The Indians trailed, 17-10, after the first quarter, but outscored the Owls, 20-6, in second to take a 30-23 lead into the locker room. North clung to a 42-41 lead at the end of the third quarter, but couldn't hold on in the fourth. The Indians (7-6) saw their four-game winning streak snapped, while the Owls moved to 5-7.
North will play next at 7 p.m. Friday at SM West (8-5).
St. Thomas Aquinas 55, St. James 53
St. James Academy erased an 11-point fourth quarter deficit, but fell to St. Thomas Aquinas, 55-53, after T.J. Williams-Bey knocked down a game-winning jumper with five seconds remaining.
Jack Moellers hit three straight free throws after getting fouled with 20.8 seconds to go to pull the Thunder (3-10) even at 53-53, but his half-court heave at the buzzer went off the rim.
Drew Nusbaum netted a game-high 26 points for the Saints (7-7). Casey Worley (18 points), Jake Dunsmore (16) and Moellers (12) all scored in double figures for the Thunder. Dunsmore had 11 points in the fourth quarter — including three 3-pointers.
The Thunder will play host to Mill Valley (6-8) at 7:45 p.m. Friday.
A full recap of the St. James/Aquinas showdown will be posted later today on shawneedispatch.com.
