There are many Johnson County Parks and Recreation Department activities coming up next month in the Shawnee area.
Here’s a look at them:
Hand and Foot is an addictive card game similar to canasta, and those who have caught the bug are invited to an early February tournament being planned by the 50 Plus Department of the Johnson County Park & Recreation District.
This Hand and Foot tournament is planned for 1 p.m. on Feb. 9 at the Mill Creek Activity Center, 6518 Vista Dr., Shawnee.
Random partners for this event will be assigned onsite.
The tournament setup will include more than two hours of play. Teams with the most points at the end of this time will be the winners. The top three scoring teams will be awarded.
Snacks will be served.
The cost for this three-hour event is $7 per person for Johnson County residents or $8 per person for nonresidents.
For more information or to register, call 913 831-3359.
Register online at jcprd.com, click on the green “Register for Activities” button and complete a barcode search for 41841.
While JCPRD’s 50 Plus programs are primarily for people who are age 50 or older, interested parties who have not yet reached that magic age may still be able to attend.
Persons 18 and older who are interested in a 50 Plus class are invited to call the 50 Plus Department at 913-826-3030 for space availability.
Explore new techniques and improve existing skills with projects inspired by the Johnson County Museum’s exhibits during a new program for adults.
Participants will apply elements of art and design based on work from old masters through contemporary artists. Students will be guided through the process by a teaching artists as they learn about the art and history of each theme. All skill levels are welcome.
During the next session on Feb. 17 with the theme “Kinetic Sculpture,” participants will create a sculpture with clear acetate and acrylic, and watch it move with air currents!
This program will take place beginning at 3 p.m. at the Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park.
The cost for one 90-minute session is $15 per person, and museum members receive a 20 percent discount but must register by telephone to receive their discount.
Registration for these programs does not include admission to the Johnson County Museum or to KidScape.
