Shawnee Mission school board members provide update on superintendent search
The Shawnee Mission School Board of Education met with Ray & Associates, the superintendent search firm consultants, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Jan. 20.
The meeting took place in a closed executive session due to the personnel matter being discussed.
The consultants from Ray & Associates reported the following information about the superintendent search process thus far:
1,047 individuals from across the country were contacted regarding the position.
47 states were represented by those that were contacted.
67 candidates applied for the position
Ray & Associates spent one month screening the applications. This initial screening included conducting additional background checks on each applicant.
Then, using the criteria and priorities that the Shawnee Mission School District community and Board of Education identified as being important, the consultants personally contacted and interviewed a select list of applicants.
A thorough investigation of each candidate was made by talking with references, state officials, other school administrators and individuals who knew the candidates and their abilities and strengths.
Following this step in the screening process, a list of candidates was presented to board members for their consideration Saturday, Jan. 20.
The presented applicants represent a variety of geographic locations and levels of educational and administrative experiences. The pool of candidates also represents diverse demographic profiles.
The list of presented candidates was thoroughly reviewed and discussed.
From that five-hour discussion, a short list of candidates was developed. Ray & Associates will arrange personal interviews with these candidates and the Board of Education members over the next several weeks.
This first round of in-person interviews will be conducted by board members in executive sessions.
The names of the candidates in this first round will not be released publically to respect their current employment status.
It is the intention of board members to complete the first and second rounds of interviews by the end of February.
It is possible that they may announce a final candidate as early as the end of March.
