Shawnee Mission Northwest junior Hannah Black made sure to get her hands on some hardware as the Cougars accepted the Class 6A girls basketball sub-state championship plaque following their 48-46 overtime win over Olathe Northwest on Friday, but that wasn’t the only object she held on to that symbolized hard work. Black carried around the team’s sledge hammer after doing the heavy lifting in crunch time. The SM Northwest junior scored the last two buckets for the Cougars in regulation to help force overtime, and finished with 10 points. Shawnee Mission Northwest senior Jordann Nachbar led all scorers with 16 points.
Hoops roundup: Cooper Kaifes’ buzzer-beater sends MV boys to state; State-bound SMNW girls win in OT

The Mill Valley boys and Shawnee Mission Northwest girls basketball teams punched tickets to their respective state tournaments on Friday. Mill Valley senior Cooper Kaifes hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer in the Jaguars’ 64-63 victory over Wyandotte. Kaifes netted 30 points and became the Jaguars’ all-time leading scorer. The SM Northwest girls squad avenged last year’s sub-state final loss with a 48-46 overtime win over the Ravens. Jordann Nachbar led all scorers with 16 points. A full recap will be posted later on Maranatha’s boys basketball team advanced to the sub-state title game with a 76-68 win over Yates Center. Jonathan Jackson had a double-double with 24 points and 13 rebounds. De Soto’s boys basketball team lost in its sub-state final clash against Topeka Seaman, 69-52. Jared Baruth paced the Wildcats with 16 points.
