Brooke Haley gave the Shawnee Mission Northwest girls soccer team a 1-0 lead after heading in a free kick from Lizzie White, the Cougars had to settle for a 1-1 tie against Lawrence High on Tuesday after Maria Duncan buried a free kick with 6:33 to play.

The Mill Valley and St. James Academy boys golf teams placed fourth and fifth, respectively, in the second round of the Eastern Kansas League boys golf tournament on Tuesday at Brookridge Golf and Fitness.

Conner Mackay struck out 13 in a complete game shutout in Game 1, and Tyler Barkemeyer threw five scoreless in Game 2, as the De Soto baseball team swept Louisburg, 4-0 and 9-0, on Tuesday. Alex Rice tied it up with an RBI single before Josh Mitchell’s walk-off sacrifice fly secured a 3-2 win for Shawnee Mission Northwest against Leavenworth. Nolan Sprague tossed six strong innings in the Mill Valley baseball team’s 7-3 win over St. Thomas Aquinas. St. James fell to Blue Valley North, 4-3, in eight innings. Shawnee Mission North rallied for three runs in the seventh, but it was too little, too late for the Indians in a 9-4 loss to Olathe Northwest.

Maranatha Christian Academy’s girls soccer team rolled to a 10-0 win over Northland Christian on Tuesday. Annika Pinter paced the Eagles with a hat trick. Mill Valley has split its games so far this week after upending Blue Valley Northwest, 4-1, on Monday and falling to St. Thomas Aquinas, 1-0, on Tuesday. Shawnee Mission Northwest jumped out to an early lead after Brooke Haley headed in a Lizzie White corner kick in the fourth minute, but Lawrence High found a late equalizer to force the Cougars to settle for a 1-1 tie on Tuesday. A full recap of Cougars’ tie against Lawrence High will be posted later on St. James had its three-game losing streak snapped after a 3-0 loss to Blue Valley North on Tuesday. Shawnee Mission North couldn’t slow down SM East in a 9-1 loss to the Lancers on Tuesday.
De Soto wins Frontier League boys tennis tournament

As De Soto prepares to begin its tenure in the United Kansas Conference, the DHS tennis team added one more Frontier League title to its résumé on Tuesday to push the Wildcats’ streak to six straight.

Shawnee Mission Northwest outlasted Olathe Northwest for a 10-9 victory before coasting past SM South, 15-0, behind a perfect game from Katie Gardiner. Josie Bedford hit a walk-off single in Game 1 and Carly Bodenhausen had six hits in each game in De Soto’s doubleheader sweep of Louisburg. DHS won Game 1, 6-5, and Game 2, 13-4. Mill Valley lost the opener of its doubleheader against St. Thomas Aquinas, 7-5, before bouncing back to beat the Saints in the nightcap, 13-11. Shawnee Mission North couldn’t keep pace with Olathe South and Olathe North, as the Indians lost to the Falcons, 22-0, and Eagles, 13-0. St. James was swept by Blue Valley North, 17-2 and 11-0.

Mitch Dervin (fourth in the 800) and Trey Callahan (seventh in the shot put) both medaled for the Mill Valley boys track and field team last weekend at the Kansas Relays. Delaney Kemp turned in ninth-place finishes in the 800 and 1,600 meters, and the MV girls 4x400 and 4x800 teams both earned medals.

The De Soto boys 4x100, 4x200 and sprint medley relays all garnered top-10 finishes on Saturday at the Kansas Relays at Rock Chalk Park. Sam Hubert placed eighth in the boys 3,200 meters and Gabby Collins finished seventh in the girls 2,000 steeplechase to give the Wildcats two top-10 individual performances.

Shawnee Mission Northwest seniors Molly Born (second in the 3,200 meters) and Abigail Kelly-Salo (fifth in the pole vault) placed for the Cougars at the Kansas Relays last weekend at Rock Chalk Park. On the boys side, Hayden Goodpaster placed third in the 400 meters and Travis Morrison took sixth in the shot put, while the 4x400, sprint and distance medley relays all cracked the top 10.

The De Soto girls soccer team bounced back from its first loss of the season to shut out Spring Hill, 4-0, on Monday. Drayvhen Moore scored twice for the Wildcats, and Alexa Rosetta and Mackenzie Mohl added a goal apiece. Maranatha suffered a heartbreaking loss at the hands of Harmon when the Hawks scored the game-winning goal with 35 seconds left for a 1-0 win over the Eagles.
