The first Lawrence police officers to reach two men fatally shot on a Massachusetts Street sidewalk described a scene of chaos, panic and hostility during testimony Friday morning at a hearing in the downtown triple-murder case.

Shawnee Mission Northwest senior Alaina Burris finished as the individual runner-up at the Free State Invitational girls bowling tournament on Friday at Royal Crest Lanes. Burris led the Cougars to match play, where they fell to Topeka West in the first round. The Mill Valley and St. James Academy bowling teams finished 10th and 11th, respectively, at the end of the three traditional and four Baker games — just missing the top eight for match play. Bri Laluk led the Jaguars, while Carey Lawrence paced the Thunder.

The Shawnee Mission North boys swim and dive team won the Shawnee Mission Northwest triangular on Thursday. Trey Smith paced the Indians with first-place times of 1:54.56 in the 200-yard freestyle and 57.41 in the 100-yard butterfly. Shawnee Mission Northwest’s Scott Klein helped the Cougars to third place after winning the 50-and 100-yard freestyles with respective times of 22.37 and 49.68.

The Mill Valley wrestling team made quick work of Leavenworth in its senior night dual — defeating the Pioneers, 63-11. The Jaguars took time to recognize seniors Jarrett Bendure, Devon Handy, Hayden Keopke, Bryson Markovich, Malik Redmond, Conner Ward, Max Whisler and Maci Montee. Shawnee Mission Northwest lost its dual against Free State, 50-27, on Wednesday. Charles Brockmann and Jerad Habben won their matches for the Cougars.

The St. James Academy and Maranatha Christian Academy girls basketball team both won in the consolation semifinals of their respective mid-season tournaments on Thursday. The Thunder coasted to a 59-37 victory over Sumner in the KAMO Classic at Blue Valley North, while the Eagles upended Independence Home School, 55-42, in the McLouth tournament. The Mill Valley girls basketball team suffered a 37-35 loss to Washburn Rural after Kendall Michalski drained a buzzer-beating 3-pointer. The Mill Valley boys basketball team suffered a 69-58 loss to Barstow in the first round of the Saints Classic at St. Thomas Aquinas.

After Blue Valley Southwest earned a one-point dual victory over the Mill Valley wrestling team on the Jaguars’ senior night last year, Travis Keal’s squad hoped to turn the tables on the Timberwolves on Wednesday at their place. The Jaguars (ranked No. 5 in Class 5A) went down to the wire with the Timberwolves (No. 3 in 5A) again on Wednesday, but they came up just short — falling to their Eastern Kansas League foe, 33-29. Zach Keal, Bryson Markovich, Conner Ward, Jarrett Bendure, Hayden Keopke and Ethan Kremer won their matches for the Jaguars. They’ll return to the mat at 6:30 tonight for senior night against Leavenworth.
MV boys swim and dive 2nd, SMNW 3rd, DHS 5th at Olathe South Invitational

The Mill Valley, Shawnee Mission Northwest and De Soto boys swim and dive teams were all in action at the Olathe South Invitational on Wednesday at Chisholm Trail Middle School. The Jaguars finished second after all three relay teams finished third or better. Shawnee Mission Northwest followed in third after Scott Klein won the 200-yard IM and 100-yard butterfly. The duo of Eli Gratz and Andre VanMeerhaeghe led De Soto to fifth place.

The Maranatha Christian Academy boys basketball team won its third straight game after defeating Meriden Jefferson West, 53-50, in the first round of the McLouth tournament on Wednesday. The Maranatha girls squad fell to Riverside in its first-round game of the McLouth tournament, 54-49. The Shawnee Mission Northwest boys basketball team suffered a 69-54 loss to Blue Springs South in its second pool play game of the Viking Classic at SM West.

De Soto bowlers Sean Cauthron and Amaya Pingry both earned first-place finishes at Wednesday’s meet at KC Bowl. Cauthron guided the De Soto boys team to first place, while Pingry paced the DHS girls to second place. Maranatha finished second on the boys side and fourth in the girls team standings. Brett Perry (fifth place) and Stephanie Pang (fourth) led the way for the Eagles. Shawnee Mission North opened its season with third-place finishes at Olathe Lanes East. Brianna Hubenett finished fourth in the girls quadrangular, while Michael Rivera took sixth in the boys individual standings.

The De Soto and Mill Valley boys and girls bowling teams were both scheduled to compete in triangulars on Tuesday, but ended up competing in duels. The Wildcats fell to Piper at Park Lanes, while the Jaguars finished second to Lansing at Crown Lanes. Sumner and Atchison didn’t travel to the respective meets. De Soto’s Sean Cauthron and Mill Valley’s Jack Matchette were crowned as individual boys champions.

Presley Barton (16 points), Evan Zars (14) and Trinity Knapp (11) all scored in double figures, and Claire Kaifes stuffed the stat sheet with five points, eight rebounds, five assists, two steals and a block.

The De Soto girls basketball team coasted to a 61-42 win over Silver Lake in the first round of the Tonganoxie Invitational on Tuesday. Mackenzie Shupe poured in a game-high 19 points, while LaMyah Ricks and Emily Fuhr chipped in 13 apiece.

Shawnee Mission Northwest’s girls basketball team’s three-game winning streak appeared to be in jeopardy on Tuesday against Washburn Rural until the Cougars rallied for a big fourth-quarter comeback to defeat the Junior Blues, 55-52. Junior Hannah Black drained four 3-pointers and led a trio of Cougars in double figures with 18 points. St. James Academy senior Mary Goetz scored 14 points, but it wasn’t enough to power the Thunder past Blue Valley North in the first round of the KAMO Classic at BV North.
