De Soto finished its Frontier League schedule undefeated after sweeping Spring Hill, 25-17, 25-9, 25-16, on Tuesday. The win over the Broncos locked up a league title for the Wildcats. St. James defeated Olathe East in straight sets, 25-20, 25-21, in its regular season finale. Maranatha split its matches at the Jackson Heights triangular — sweeping Jackson Heights, 25-17, 25-13, and losing to Horton, 27-25, 25-19.
Mill Valley’s Hadden runner-up at 5A state golf tournament; SJA 4th, MV 5th

Mill Valley senior Bella Hadden was the runner-up at the Class 5A girls golf state tournament on Monday at Emporia Municipal Golf Course. Sarah Lawson followed in eighth to help Mill Valley to fifth place. St. James finished fourth behind medalists Allison Comer (seventh place) and Kate Duggan (12th place).

Ian Carroll and Myles Mustapich scored in the final 10 minutes to lead the Mill Valley soccer team to a 2-0 win over Free State. Daniel Fuller scored twice, and Aaron Bowlin also found the back of the net to guide Maranatha to a 3-1 win over Bishop Ward. De Soto had its four-game winning streak snapped after a 2-0 loss to Baldwin.
SMNW girls golf 10th at state; SMN’s Killeen ties for 24th

Shawnee Mission Northwest’s girls golf team placed 10th at the Class 6A state tournament on Monday at Mariah Hills Golf Course in Dodge City. Senior Cassie Gomer led the Cougars with a round of 95 to tie for 35th place. Shawnee Mission North junior Katlyn Killeen tied for 24th with a round of 91.
State tennis roundup: SMNW’s Oliver 7th in 6A singles; MCA senior trio competes at 3-2-1A tournament

Shawnee Mission Northwest senior Lily Oliver posted a 4-2 record at the Class 6A tournament to earn a seventh-place finish over the weekend at the Riverside Tennis Complex in Wichita. Sophomore Michaela Crowe joined Oliver in the singles bracket as the other state qualifier for SM Northwest, going 0-2. Northwest finished ninth in the 6A team standings. Three Maranatha Christian Academy seniors ended their high school careers at the 3-2-1A state tournament on Friday at the Harmon Park Tennis Complex in Prairie Village. Senior Emma Prowell went 1-2 in the singles bracket, while the MCA duo of Alayna Marmon and Mattie Schoenfeld had the same record in doubles. The Eagles tied for 15th place.
St. James girls tennis wins first state title in school history

The St. James Academy girls tennis team won its first state title in school history, as all four of the Thunder’s entries placed in the top 12. Senior Catherine Rieke led the way with a third-place finish, and freshman Gabbi Taylor followed in seventh in the singles bracket. In doubles, Meredith Bierbaum/Tara Devine and Jillian Kubicki/Ryan Starkey placed sixth and 11th, respectively. Mill Valley tied for fourth despite only having two entries. In their first time competing at the state tournament, freshman Sophie Lecuru placed fifth in singles, while junior Anika Roy and freshman Ellie Schaffer finished eighth in doubles. De Soto sophomore Issa Sullivan took fourth in singles to earn an eighth-place team finish for the Wildcats.
Kasunic wins Sunflower League meet, leads SM North to first place

Shawnee Mission North junior Katie Kasunic didn’t need to be reminded of the last time she ran at Rim Rock Farm. After not being able to finish at last year’s state meet, Kasunic wanted to make that experience a distant memory as she spiked up for the Sunflower League meet on Friday. Kasunic put the 2016 state meet in the rearview mirror just like she did with her competition on Friday, as she won the meet and led the Indians to a Sunflower League title.

After struggling to find success through the air last week against Shawnee Mission South, the SM Northwest passing attack was firing on all cylinders from the first play from scrimmage in Thursday’s 63-13 win over SM North. Mill Valley snapped a three-game losing streak with a 35-30 win over Blue Valley North, as quarterback Brody Flaming got the offense back on track. Nate Burdette threw three touchdown passes to Brock West in a 40-28 win over Atchison County Community. St. James lost the lead late before falling to Kapaun Mt. Carmel, 28-27, in overtime.
Watts leads De Soto in 52-7 win over Spring Hill

De Soto senior Trevor Watts hasn’t had a problem finding the end zone over the past month, but he still had a point that he needed to prove to himself going into Friday’s game against Spring Hill. After scoring three touchdowns in three straight contests, Watts wanted to take his game to another level. Watts achieved that in just one half of playing time, as he scored four touchdowns — two rushing and two receiving — to lead the Wildcats to a 52-7 rout of the Broncos.

The De Soto soccer team won its fourth straight match after shutting out Paola, 5-0, on Thursday. Mill Valley trailed for most of the night, but pulled ahead in the final 10 minutes for a 3-2 win over Blue Valley North. In its first game in back-to-back days, Shawnee Mission Northwest edged Olathe West, 1-0. Blue Valley Northwest pulled away in the second half to hand St. James a 4-2 setback. Shawnee Mission North suffered its second 2-0 loss of the week after falling to Leavenworth. Maranatha’s six-game winning streak was snapped after a 5-0 loss to an undefeated Van Horn team.

The Shawnee Mission Northwest volleyball team ended its regular season in style with sweeps of Lansing and SM West on Thursday. De Soto won the Bishop Miege triangular with sweeps of Miege and Topeka Hayden to notch another 30-win season. St. James pushed its winning streak to nine after defeating St. Teresa’s, 25-11, 25-22. Mill Valley rolled to a 25-16, 25-20 victory in a non-league match against Olathe South. Shawnee Mission North defeated Turner in straight sets, 25-13, 25-12, 25-14, on Wednesday. Maranatha split its matches at the Eudora triangular — sweeping Turner and falling to Eudora.

The Shawnee Mission Northwest girls golf team finished third at Thursday’s Class 6A regional to qualify for the state tournament. Senior Cassie Gomer led the way for the Cougars after firing a round of 88 to take eighth place. Shawnee Mission North junior Katlyn Killeen punched her ticket to state for the third straight year to lead the Indians. Killeen carded a round of 95, which was good for 10th place.
De Soto boys cross country wins Frontier League meet; DHS girls second

The De Soto boys cross country had three runners finish in the top 10 — including champion Sam Hubert — as the Wildcats won the Frontier League meet on Thursday at the Baldwin City Golf Course. The De Soto girls squad narrowly missed out on making it a sweep for the Wildcats after finishing second by two points to Baldwin.
St. James girls XC wins EKL meet; MV boys finish as league runners-up

The St. James Academy girls cross country team continued its winning ways with a first-place finish at the Eastern Kansas League meet on Thursday at Johnson County Community College. Sarah Murrow, Katie Moore and Mary O’Connor placed in the top 10 to lead St. James to first place. Mill Valley’s Britton Nelson and Morgan Koca rounded out the top 10 to help the Jaguars take third. Mill Valley finished second in the boys race behind top-10 finishes from Greg Haynes and Jack Terry. Jack Moore was the league runner-up to pace St. James to third place.
SMNW’s Ross wins all-around at SM South Invitational

Shawnee Mission Northwest senior Hallie Ross was looking forward to competing in a unique, stress-free setting on Tuesday at the SM South All-Around Invitational, and she didn’t disappoint. While Ross has enjoyed her first season on the SM Northwest gymnastics team, she felt a little more at ease in a meet with no team scores and being able to wear her personal leotard. Ross placed second in the uneven bars, beam and vault and finished fourth in the floor exercise to claim the all-around title.

The St. James Academy and Mill Valley girls golf teams both qualified for the state tournament at Tuesday’s rain-shortened regional at Sykes/Lady Overland Park Golf Club after placing second and third, respectively. St. Thomas Aquinas won the regional title. Mill Valley senior Bella Hadden and junior Sarah Lawson finished first and fourth, respectively. The St. James trio of sophomore Allison Comer (fifth place) and senior Mary Kate Krebs (sixth) and Kate Duggan (eighth) all placed in the top 10.

Daniel Fuller recorded a hat trick to power the Maranatha Christian Academy soccer team past Barstow, 3-0, on Tuesday. De Soto shut out Ottawa, 3-0, to win for the seventh time in its last eight matches. Mill Valley’s comeback fell just short in a 4-3 loss to Blue Valley West. Shawnee Mission North suffered a 2-0 loss at the hands of Olathe East. St. James fell to O’Fallon Township, 3-0, on Friday and DeSmet Jesuit, 2-0, on Saturday in St. Louis.
