Maranatha Christian Academy senior Brett Perry started his bowling season in style with a first-place finish at Monday’s triangular at Park Lanes against Turner and Schlagle. The Eagles finished with a team score of 1,858 to end up in second place. Maranatha’s Stephanie Pang finished as the runner-up on the girls side with a series of 418 to lead the Eagles to third place.
Mill Valley swimming wins Turner Invite, De Soto takes 7th

The Mill Valley boys swim team showed strength in numbers on Monday at the Turner Invite. The Jaguars didn’t win any of the 11 events, but their depth was the decisive factor in their first-place finish. Mill Valley finished with a team score of 394 — edging Lansing by six points for the team title. Bonner Springs was close behind in third. De Soto was also back in action for its first meet of 2018, and finished seventh in the team standings.

The St. James Academy girls and boys basketball teams both lost in the 810 Varsity Showcase: Session I on Saturday at St. Thomas Aquinas. The St. James girls suffered a 51-42 loss to Olathe South, while the St. James boys fell to Hogan Prep, 65-49.

Mill Valley senior Conner Ward and St. James sophomore Cade Lautt won weight class titles on Saturday at the Derby Invitational. Mill Valley, St. James, Shawnee Mission Northwest, SM North and De Soto were all in action this weekend at Derby.

Shawnee Mission North and SM Northwest’s boys swim and dive teams placed third and sixth, respectively, at the SMNW Invitational on Saturday. Scott Klein won the 50-yard freestyle for the Cougars, and was the runner-up in the 500-yard freestyle. Clayton McMillin took second for SM North in the 100-yard breaststroke, and helped the Indians to third place in the 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relays.

The Shawnee Mission North, SM Northwest and De Soto boys and girls basketball teams all picked up victories on Friday. SM North earned roads wins over SM East, SM Northwest also won its games on the road at Olathe West and De Soto triumphed at home with two victories over Eudora.
De Soto inducts 7 members into inaugural Hall of Fame class

De Soto High School has been in a big transition period over the past year between moving from Class 4A-I to 5A and preparing to move from the Frontier League to the newly-formed United Kansas Conference, but the Wildcats want to make sure to take time to honor their past. De Soto is taking the opportunity to do that tonight by inducting the first seven members into its Hall of Fame. Doug Bedford, Jeff Beruan, Mary Etta Copeland, Richard Copeland, Lt. Cmdr. Joshua Goodin, Coy Lea Rose North and Derek Tate will be recognized in a ceremony between the De Soto varsity girls and boys basketball team’s home games against Eudora at approximately 7:15 p.m.

The St. James Academy boys swim and dive team won seven of the 12 events at the Blue Valley West Invitational on Thursday to finish second to BV West. Event champions for the Thunder included: Nick Callahan (50-and 100-yard freestyles); Harry Tjaden (200-yard freestyle); JT Amrein (100-yard breaststroke); Spencer Burkard (1-meter dive); Zach Kurland, Amrein, Tjaden and Callahan (200-and 400-yard freestyle relays).

After coughing up a 10-point halftime lead and a six-point advantage with two-and-a-half minutes left, the Mill Valley boys basketball team took the lead for good against St. James Academy on Wednesday with a jumper from Matty Wittenauer with 50 seconds left. Wittenauer’s clutch shot and a game-high 16 points from Keeshawn Mason highlighted a 43-41 win for the Jaguars. Jack Moellers led the Thunder with 10 points. Moellers hit a 3-pointer to pull the Thunder within one with three seconds left, but it was too little too late.
Mill Valley turns up defensive pressure in second half of 46-32 win over St. James

It wasn’t the best shooting night for the Mill Valley girls basketball team on Wednesday against St. James Academy, but that didn’t bother the Jaguars. Mill Valley has taken a lot of pride on the defensive end this season, and it helped the Jaguars create some separation from the Thunder in the second half of a 46-32 victory. Claire Kaifes led the way for Mill Valley with 15 points, five assists and five rebounds. Mary Goetz paced St. James with 10 points and six boards.
De Soto basketball sweeps Paola

The De Soto girls and boys basketball teams started off the new year off with wins at Paola on Tuesday. Mackenzie Shupe scored a game-high 24 points to lead the De Soto girls to a 53-48 win over the Panthers. Brannon Bell paced the Wildcats with 21 points in a 55-49 win for the DHS boys.
