One person seriously injured in crash with utility pole

Shawnee Police are investigating after an SUV slammed into a utility pole, leaving the driver seriously injured early Saturday. A neighbor called 911 around 1:40 Saturday morning, after a Cadillac Escalade crashed head-on into a utility pole at the T-intersection of West 55th and Flint Streets.

For three Shawnee police officers used to escorting large parties of vehicles, Thursday stood out as one they’ll never forget. It wasn’t the longest motorcade they had ever helped escort, and it wasn’t the largest, but it may have just been one of the most important. Master Patrol Officers Steve Walsh, Matt Sumpter and Matt Klein worked with members of multiple other agencies to escort President Barack Obama from Topeka to Lawrence, and back again, during his visit to Lawrence last week.
