This year’s Small Business Saturday in Shawnee is going to be big. At least that’s what a long list of local businesses and the day’s organizers are hoping as they’ve prepared for this year’s event on Nov. 29. The Shawnee Chamber of Commerce is organizing the event again, but with big changes this year.

Shawnee repairing pipes from the inside out

Steam is pumped up into the air from a machine holding a serpentine looking large hose, rising from open man-hole covers and evaporating into the cold air. The steam has been popping up in recent years around Shawnee as the city uses a complex system to help maintain and repair storm drainage pipes. The process is called Cured In Place Pipe (CIPP) and uses a resin to patch up metal corrugated pipes that are deteriorating around the city. The steam is not the type of steam you would see rising from man-hole covers in a big city like Chicago or Denver.

Westbrook Village developer terminates deal

A deal to develop the mostly vacant Westbrook Village Shopping Center has ended before any concrete retail development plans ever really got started. As of Sept. 29, the developer MDDS has pulled out of a deal with the city to develop a big-box 240,000-square-foot retail project at Quivira Road and 75th Street. MDDS terminated the project after several months of preliminary work and studies on the site. Reports were that Menards, a regional home improvement store, was primed to be the main tenant.

That’s what the leaders behind the new Overland Park Regional Medical Center Emergency Room, an HCA Midwest Health facility, have done. Located at 10310 Shawnee Mission Parkway, one block west of Interstate 35, the emergency room is a freestanding department with everything a person would expect to find at a traditional emergency room in a hospital.
Home invasion suspects focus of Shawnee police search

Shawnee Police spent nearly six hours searching for suspects involved in a home invasion, which occurred in Independence, Missouri overnight. A vehicle taken during the home invasion was found in a Shawnee backyard.
