LONE STAR — The fish play hard to get at first on this windswept late spring day, one of at least 200 that Casey Scanlon will spend on a lake this year. Today it’s Lone Star Lake in southwest Douglas County where the 28-year-old Lenexa resident and Shawnee Mission Northwest alum will fish to tune up for June’s three Bassmaster Elite Series tournaments — the first of which was fished over the weekend at Toledo Bend in Many, La.
Marina to be open all weekends in May

The Shawnee Mission Park Marina will operate on the weekends of May 5 and 6, May 12 and 13, and May 19 and 20, prior to opening daily for the summer season beginning May 26.

We don’t have much luck with exotic species, I’m afraid. Other bird-watchers may chalk up an elusive red-breasted bumbersnatch or blue-winged shrike or whatever, but we have had to content ourselves with the normal progression of finches and such.

It’s taken the best part of a week, but the birds have finally returned. We were gone just a day short of two weeks over the holidays, and during that time the birds who normally visit the feeders off our deck out back emptied the feeders and went off one knows not where in search of better pickings.
