Mill Valley wrestling falls to BVSW, 33-29, in top-five dual

After Blue Valley Southwest earned a one-point dual victory over the Mill Valley wrestling team on the Jaguars’ senior night last year, Travis Keal’s squad hoped to turn the tables on the Timberwolves on Wednesday at their place. The Jaguars (ranked No. 5 in Class 5A) went down to the wire with the Timberwolves (No. 3 in 5A) again on Wednesday, but they came up just short — falling to their Eastern Kansas League foe, 33-29. Zach Keal, Bryson Markovich, Conner Ward, Jarrett Bendure, Hayden Keopke and Ethan Kremer won their matches for the Jaguars. They’ll return to the mat at 6:30 tonight for senior night against Leavenworth.
MV boys swim and dive 2nd, SMNW 3rd, DHS 5th at Olathe South Invitational

The Mill Valley, Shawnee Mission Northwest and De Soto boys swim and dive teams were all in action at the Olathe South Invitational on Wednesday at Chisholm Trail Middle School. The Jaguars finished second after all three relay teams finished third or better. Shawnee Mission Northwest followed in third after Scott Klein won the 200-yard IM and 100-yard butterfly. The duo of Eli Gratz and Andre VanMeerhaeghe led De Soto to fifth place.

The Maranatha Christian Academy boys basketball team won its third straight game after defeating Meriden Jefferson West, 53-50, in the first round of the McLouth tournament on Wednesday. The Maranatha girls squad fell to Riverside in its first-round game of the McLouth tournament, 54-49. The Shawnee Mission Northwest boys basketball team suffered a 69-54 loss to Blue Springs South in its second pool play game of the Viking Classic at SM West.
Bowling roundup: De Soto’s Cauthron, Pingry win at KC Bowl

De Soto bowlers Sean Cauthron and Amaya Pingry both earned first-place finishes at Wednesday’s meet at KC Bowl. Cauthron guided the De Soto boys team to first place, while Pingry paced the DHS girls to second place. Maranatha finished second on the boys side and fourth in the girls team standings. Brett Perry (fifth place) and Stephanie Pang (fourth) led the way for the Eagles. Shawnee Mission North opened its season with third-place finishes at Olathe Lanes East. Brianna Hubenett finished fourth in the girls quadrangular, while Michael Rivera took sixth in the boys individual standings.

The De Soto and Mill Valley boys and girls bowling teams were both scheduled to compete in triangulars on Tuesday, but ended up competing in duels. The Wildcats fell to Piper at Park Lanes, while the Jaguars finished second to Lansing at Crown Lanes. Sumner and Atchison didn’t travel to the respective meets. De Soto’s Sean Cauthron and Mill Valley’s Jack Matchette were crowned as individual boys champions.

In a showdown between the top two state-ranked Class 5A girls basketball teams, Mill Valley upended Lansing, 55-36, on Tuesday. Presley Barton (16 points), Evan Zars (14) and Trinity Knapp (11) all scored in double figures, and Claire Kaifes stuffed the stat sheet with five points, eight rebounds, five assists, two steals and a block.
De Soto girls basketball stifles Silver Lake, 61-42

The De Soto girls basketball team coasted to a 61-42 win over Silver Lake in the first round of the Tonganoxie Invitational on Tuesday. Mackenzie Shupe poured in a game-high 19 points, while LaMyah Ricks and Emily Fuhr chipped in 13 apiece.

Shawnee Mission Northwest’s girls basketball team’s three-game winning streak appeared to be in jeopardy on Tuesday against Washburn Rural until the Cougars rallied for a big fourth-quarter comeback to defeat the Junior Blues, 55-52. Junior Hannah Black drained four 3-pointers and led a trio of Cougars in double figures with 18 points. St. James Academy senior Mary Goetz scored 14 points, but it wasn’t enough to power the Thunder past Blue Valley North in the first round of the KAMO Classic at BV North.

Shawnee Mission North’s boys basketball team bounced back from back-to-back losses to defeat Basehor-Linwood, 59-51, in the first round of the Bobcat Invitational on Monday. Shawnee Mission Northwest saw its three-game winning streak snapped after a 61-58 loss to Blue Valley North in pool play of the Viking Classic at SM West.
De Soto boys basketball surges past Holton in first round of Tonganoxie Invitational

Shots simply weren’t falling for the De Soto boys basketball team in the first round of the Tonganoxie Invitational on Monday against Holton, but Matt Rice’s players knew that there were other areas of the game that they could excel in to come away with a victory. Although De Soto struggled from the free-throw line, the Wildcats in green and white had more than twice as many attempts (17 for 29) as the Wildcats in blue (11 for 14). De Soto’s defensive pressure also forced Holton to commit 16 turnovers en route to a 37-34 win.

Shawnee Mission North cross country coach Aaron Davidson, St. James Academy cross country coach Rob Harber and former Mill Valley girls track and field coach Mark Peck were named Kansas Cross Country and Track and Field Coaches Association Coaches of the Year for their respective classifications on Jan. 6. Davidson and Harber were selected as KCCTFCA Girls Cross Country Coaches of the Year for 6A and 5A, respectively. Peck was named the 5A KCCTFCA Girls Track and Field Coach of the Year.

The Mill Valley wrestling duo of seniors Conner Ward and Jarrett Bendure and St. James sophomore Cade Lautt all won their weight classes on Saturday at the Bobcat Classic at Basehor-Linwood. Mill Valley edged Platte County by 0.5 points to take fifth place. St. James finished 18th. Shawnee Mission North wrestlers Justice Hulse and Alonso Salgado both finished fifth in their respective weight classes to help the Indians tie for 15th place at the Sam Martin Invitational in Plattsburg, Mo.

Shawnee Mission North junior Jarrett Hensley led another comeback effort for the Indians on Friday against Lawrence High with a game-high 26 points, but the Indians came up short in a 72-64 loss to the Lions.

One of the biggest challenges for the Shawnee Mission North girls basketball team this season has been finding another offensive threat to go along with sophomore standout LeLe Love. First-year coach Amanda McNeill wanted to see more aggressiveness from most of her team in the Indians’ 62-30 loss to Lawrence High (ranked No. 7 in Class 6A), but there was one player who she had no complaints about. Sophomore Keagan Stiers saw significant varsity playing time after also seeing some action in the JV game, and stepped up to score 10 points — which matched Love for a team high.

Shawnee Mission Northwest’s boys bowling team led the Shawnee area schools that were in action on Friday with a fifth-place finish at the Free State Invitational at Royal Crest Lanes. Mill Valley and St. James placed 12th and 15th, respectively.
