Shawnee resident and University of Kansas alumnus Rory Ramsdell built a new garage for his daughters, Raegan and Bailey Ramsdell, to be able to park in, but that’s far from the only use that the family gets out of it. Rory has turned the garage into a mini Allen Fieldhouse.

The abnormally low temperature and the light rain that fell on Thursday afternoon in Shawnee didn’t make it feel like the first day of summer, but the damp and dreary conditioning didn’t keep 26 children from enjoying a special swimming lesson at the Thomas A. Soetaert Aquatic Center. Thursday’s lesson was going to take place whether there was one or all 30 of the children who were pre- registered arrived. The lesson at the Thomas A. Soetaert Aquatic Center was one of several thousand that was put on Thursday as part of the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson, which is a worldwide event organized by the Overland Park-based World Waterpark Association.

Shawnee-area football players propel Kansas All-Stars to 30-0 win in GKCFCA All-Star Game

The Kansas All-Stars snapped a seven-game losing streak to Missouri in the Greater Kansas City Football Coaches Association All-Star Game with the help of 11 Shawnee-area players. Mill Valley alumnus Brody Flaming was named the Kansas MVP after throwing touchdown passes to Shawnee Mission Northwest product Hayden Goodpaster and former St. Thomas Aquinas standout Joseph Clune. Northwest alumnus Travis Morrison helped highlight the shutout with 1.5 sacks. St. James product Jack Petz led Kansas with 45 rushing yards. De Soto alumnus Bryce Mohl scored on a touchdown run. Before the game, fellow DHS product Jack Barger was the Kansas recipient of the Ronald Warren Award — which goes to the most outstanding linebacker in the state. Other area alumni who played were Ike Valencia (Mill Valley), Evan Rice (MV), Trevor Watts (De Soto), Zach Titus (DHS) and Parker Kelley (St. James).

After leading the Mill Valley softball team to the state semifinals for the second straight year, catcher Jess Garcia, center fielder Peyton Moeder and pitcher Lauren Florez were recognized by the Kansas Softball Coaches Association by being named to the Class 5A all-state team. Sixteen Shawnee area softball players earned all-league honors.
St. James alumna Jenna Gray finishes as NCAA runner-up in women’s javelin throw

St. James alumna Jenna Gray ended her sophomore track and field season at Stanford with a bang by finishing as the runner-up in the women’s javelin throw at the NCAA outdoor championships on Thursday at Oregon’s Hayward Field. Gray’s throw of 57.29 meters (187 feet, 11 inches) was a personal-best, and only trailed Stanford teammate Mackenzie Little.

Shawnee Mission North alumna Hannah Redick scored the game-winning run in Game 2 of the Mo-Kan Softball All-Stars Series on Monday at the Shawnee Mission Softball Complex. The Kansas All-Stars edged the Missouri All-Stars, 6-5, in Game 2 before rolling to an 8-0 victory in a shortened Game 3. The Missouri All-Stars won Game 1, 4-3. Shawnee Mission Northwest product Emily Wells was also on the Kansas team, but did not play due to an injury.
