Watts leads De Soto in 52-7 win over Spring Hill

De Soto senior Trevor Watts hasn’t had a problem finding the end zone over the past month, but he still had a point that he needed to prove to himself going into Friday’s game against Spring Hill. After scoring three touchdowns in three straight contests, Watts wanted to take his game to another level. Watts achieved that in just one half of playing time, as he scored four touchdowns — two rushing and two receiving — to lead the Wildcats to a 52-7 rout of the Broncos.

The De Soto soccer team won its fourth straight match after shutting out Paola, 5-0, on Thursday. Mill Valley trailed for most of the night, but pulled ahead in the final 10 minutes for a 3-2 win over Blue Valley North. In its first game in back-to-back days, Shawnee Mission Northwest edged Olathe West, 1-0. Blue Valley Northwest pulled away in the second half to hand St. James a 4-2 setback. Shawnee Mission North suffered its second 2-0 loss of the week after falling to Leavenworth. Maranatha’s six-game winning streak was snapped after a 5-0 loss to an undefeated Van Horn team.
Volleyball roundup: SMNW, DHS sweep triangulars; SJA, MV, SMN win

The Shawnee Mission Northwest volleyball team ended its regular season in style with sweeps of Lansing and SM West on Thursday. De Soto won the Bishop Miege triangular with sweeps of Miege and Topeka Hayden to notch another 30-win season. St. James pushed its winning streak to nine after defeating St. Teresa’s, 25-11, 25-22. Mill Valley rolled to a 25-16, 25-20 victory in a non-league match against Olathe South. Shawnee Mission North defeated Turner in straight sets, 25-13, 25-12, 25-14, on Wednesday. Maranatha split its matches at the Eudora triangular — sweeping Turner and falling to Eudora.
SMNW girls golf qualifies for state; SMN’s Killeen state-bound

The Shawnee Mission Northwest girls golf team finished third at Thursday’s Class 6A regional to qualify for the state tournament. Senior Cassie Gomer led the way for the Cougars after firing a round of 88 to take eighth place. Shawnee Mission North junior Katlyn Killeen punched her ticket to state for the third straight year to lead the Indians. Killeen carded a round of 95, which was good for 10th place.
De Soto boys cross country wins Frontier League meet; DHS girls second

The De Soto boys cross country had three runners finish in the top 10 — including champion Sam Hubert — as the Wildcats won the Frontier League meet on Thursday at the Baldwin City Golf Course. The De Soto girls squad narrowly missed out on making it a sweep for the Wildcats after finishing second by two points to Baldwin.
St. James girls XC wins EKL meet; MV boys finish as league runners-up

The St. James Academy girls cross country team continued its winning ways with a first-place finish at the Eastern Kansas League meet on Thursday at Johnson County Community College. Sarah Murrow, Katie Moore and Mary O’Connor placed in the top 10 to lead St. James to first place. Mill Valley’s Britton Nelson and Morgan Koca rounded out the top 10 to help the Jaguars take third. Mill Valley finished second in the boys race behind top-10 finishes from Greg Haynes and Jack Terry. Jack Moore was the league runner-up to pace St. James to third place.
SMNW’s Ross wins all-around at SM South Invitational

Shawnee Mission Northwest senior Hallie Ross was looking forward to competing in a unique, stress-free setting on Tuesday at the SM South All-Around Invitational, and she didn’t disappoint. While Ross has enjoyed her first season on the SM Northwest gymnastics team, she felt a little more at ease in a meet with no team scores and being able to wear her personal leotard. Ross placed second in the uneven bars, beam and vault and finished fourth in the floor exercise to claim the all-around title.
St. James, Mill Valley girls golf state-bound; MV’s Hadden wins regional title

The St. James Academy and Mill Valley girls golf teams both qualified for the state tournament at Tuesday’s rain-shortened regional at Sykes/Lady Overland Park Golf Club after placing second and third, respectively. St. Thomas Aquinas won the regional title. Mill Valley senior Bella Hadden and junior Sarah Lawson finished first and fourth, respectively. The St. James trio of sophomore Allison Comer (fifth place) and senior Mary Kate Krebs (sixth) and Kate Duggan (eighth) all placed in the top 10.

Daniel Fuller recorded a hat trick to power the Maranatha Christian Academy soccer team past Barstow, 3-0, on Tuesday. De Soto shut out Ottawa, 3-0, to win for the seventh time in its last eight matches. Mill Valley’s comeback fell just short in a 4-3 loss to Blue Valley West. Shawnee Mission North suffered a 2-0 loss at the hands of Olathe East. St. James fell to O’Fallon Township, 3-0, on Friday and DeSmet Jesuit, 2-0, on Saturday in St. Louis.
Maranatha upsets No. 1 Heritage Christian; SJA, DHS, SMNW record sweeps

The Maranatha Christian Academy volleyball team knocked off Class 2A’s top-ranked Heritage Christian in straight sets, 25-17, 25-18, 25-23, on Tuesday. St. James Academy picked up two victories on its home court after defeating Blue Valley Southwest, 25-14, 25-18, and BV North (No. 3 in 6A), 25-22, 25-19. Shawnee Mission Northwest rolled past SM North, 25-11, 25-21, 25-7, to extend its winning streak to nine matches. De Soto pushed its winning streak to seven matches after sweeping Ottawa, 25-16, 25-15, 25-10. Mill Valley swept Miege, 25-15, 25-17, before falling to St. Thomas Aquinas (No. 7 in 5A) in three sets, 19-25, 25-22, 13-25.
St. James wins 5A regional girls tennis title

In what would normally be one of the most stressful matches of a regional tennis tournament, there was nothing but laughter, a few jokes and a joyful hug during Saturday’s doubles final. St. James Academy junior Tara Devine and senior Meredith Bierbaum defeated their teammates, seniors Jillian Kubicki and Ryan Starkey, 6-3, 6-2, but there were smiles all around since the Thunder had won a Class 5A regional title and were sending all six of their players to state. It’s the first time in school history that the Thunder qualified six players for the 5A state tournament, which will take place Friday and Saturday at Maize South. Catherine Rieke and Gabbi Taylor finished second and fourth, respectively, for the Thunder in singles. Mill Valley finished second behind third-place finishes from Sophie Lecuru and the doubles team of Anika Roy and Ellie Schaffer. De Soto sophomore Issa Sullivan won the regional singles title, and led the Wildcats to fourth place.
De Soto volleyball wins Spikefest

Heading into Saturday’s Spikefest volleyball tournament, there was one team in particular that the De Soto was hoping to face if the Wildcats advanced to the finals. De Soto (28-3, ranked No. 4 in Class 5A) and Lansing (28-5, No. 2 in 5A) were the top-seeded teams in the 10-team tournament, and the Wildcats were eager to face the Lions to avenge two of their three losses on the season. The Wildcats got their wish and rose to the occasion to defeat the Lions in the championship match, 25-19, 28-26. With the victory over the Lions, the Wildcats won their home tournament for the first time in school history.

Fifteen Shawnee area tennis players qualified for state on Saturday out of their respective regional tournaments. Area state qualifiers include: Meredith Bierbaum/Tara Devine (St. James), Jillian Kubicki/Ryan Starkey (St. James), Catherine Rieke (St. James), Gabbi Taylor (St. James), Sophie Lecuru (Mill Valley), Anika Roy/Ellie Schaffer (Mill Valley), Issa Sullivan (De Soto), Emma Prowell (Maranatha), Mattie Schoenfeld/Alayna Marmon (Maranatha), Lily Oliver (Shawnee Mission Northwest and Michaela Crowe (Shawnee Mission Northwest). De Soto’s option attack gashed the Baldwin defense for more the 350 yards and six touchdowns, and the defense recorded another shutout in the Wildcats’ 42-0 win over the Bulldogs. St. Thomas Aquinas handed St. James its first loss of the season — defeating the Thunder, 34-14. Maranatha was unable to hold off Uniontown in the second half of a 34-26 setback. Shawnee Mission North fell short against Leavenworth in a 17-7 loss. Mill Valley lost to Bishop Miege, 54-21, in a clash of defending state champions.
