Mill Valley softball wins second straight regional title

The De Soto, Shawnee Mission Northwest, Mill Valley and Maranatha Christian Academy girls soccer teams all won on Tuesday to advance to the regional semifinals. The Wildcats shut out Highland Park, 11-0. Adriana Bobki scored twice to guide Shawnee Mission Northwest to a 7-0 win over Harmon. Payge Bush had a hat trick to power Mill Valley to a 6-1 victory over St. James. The Thunder finished the season with a record of (4-12-1). Maranatha tripped up Tonganoxie, 3-1, behind goals from Elizabeth Goodman, Debra Zuniga and Gina Favero. Shawnee Mission North ended its season with a 6-0 loss to Blue Valley West.

Gina Favero scored in overtime to send Maranatha to a 1-0 win over Heritage Christian and a school record 10th regular season victory. De Soto upended Baldwin, 5-3, to go undefeated in Frontier League play for the second consecutive season.

The St. James Academy boys tennis team finished fourth, and Mill Valley tied for 12th at the Class 5A state tournament on Saturday in Emporia. St. James’ Isaac Howes (fourth in singles), SJA’s Trey Niesen/Josh Spradlin (fifth in doubles) and Mill Valley’s Drake Brizendine/Jacob Hoffman (11th in doubles) all earned state medals.

The Maranatha Christian Academy doubles team of Aaron Bowlin and Daniel Siemers finished the season with a record of 21-0 after winning the Class 3-2-1A state title on Saturday at the Riverside Tennis Complex in Wichita.
Mill Valley sweeps EKL track and field titles; SJA girls 4th, boys 7th

The Mill Valley girls and boys track and field teams won Eastern Kansas League titles on Friday. The MV girls won their 18th consecutive league title (two in the EKL, 16 in the Kaw Valley League). The MV multi-athlete trio of Evan Zars, Lydia McDaneld and Erin Miller combined for 10 top-five finishes. Mitch Dervin won the 1,600 to lead the MV boys. The Jaguars went from worst to first in the EKL boys team standings from 2017 to 2018. St. James finished fourth in the girls team standings and seventh on the boys side. Katie Moore won the girls 800 and anchored the Thunder’s 4x400 relay to first place. Jack Albright won the boys high jump to pace the St. James boys.

The Shawnee Mission Northwest boys track and field team won a Sunflower League championship on Friday at Leavenworth. Hayden Goodpaster turned in two of the Cougars’ first-place finishes by winning the 200 and 400. Luke Sabus (3,200), Travis Morrison (shot put) and Seth Mosburg (pole vault) also won their respective events. The SM North boys finished sixth by event champions Asher Molina (1,600) and Ike Diggs (110 hurdles). Kauilani Misipeka won the shot put to lead the SM North girls to ninth place. Abigail Kelly-Salo won the pole vault to guide the Cougars to 11th place.

Peyton Wagoner, Adde Hinkle, Emerson Kaiser and Ella Shurley scored a goal apiece, and Bailey Heffernon notched the shutout to lead the Mill Valley girls soccer team to a 4-0 win over Blue Valley North on Thursday. It was also senior night for Hinkle, Heffernon, Payge Bush, Madison Irish, Cori Carver, Gracie Eckardt and Emily Munyer.

With four straight wins to end the regular season, the Mill Valley baseball teams feels like it’s playing some of its best ball heading into regionals. The Jaguars’ winning streak hit four games on Thursday after their 4-2 victory over Olathe West on senior night for Connor Nekola, Will Morris, Dylan Van Dyke, Cole Abram, Jack Correll, Andrew Sumner and Brayden Carr. Nekola tossed four innings of one-run ball to get the win. Ethan Keopke had two doubles and an RBI to pace the Mill Valley offense.
De Soto boys track and field wins Frontier League title; Heer breaks own DHS school record in girls shot put

The De Soto boys track and field team won the Frontier League meet on Thursday. De Soto won the 4x100 and 4x800-meter relays, and Exavier Jackson (200 meters), Sam Hubert (3,200 meters) and Zach Titus (shot put) won their respective events. Kelsey Heer broke her own school record in the shot put to lead the De Soto girls to fourth place. Heer won the shot put, and Emily Fuhr finished first in the discus.
