Girls basketball roundup: Mill Valley earns bounce-back win over BVNW

Mill Valley’s girls basketball team got back into the win column on Tuesday with a 53-26 win over Blue Valley Northwest. Shawnee Mission Northwest roared back from a 16-point second-half deficit to make it a one-point game in the final minute, but fell to Lawrence High, 51-45. De Soto was unable to complete the season sweep of Eudora after falling to the Cardinals, 38-31. St. James fell short against Blue Valley North, 44-31. Shawnee Mission North got off to a fast start in the first four minutes — scoring the first five points of the game — but fizzled after that in a 52-32 loss to SM South.
Boys hoops roundup: MCA’s winning streak moves to 11 after rout of Heritage; DHS powers past Eudora

Maranatha Christian Academy’s boys basketball team pushed its winning streak to 11 games after a 71-33 victory over Heritage Christian on Tuesday. De Soto used a balanced offensive performance with four players scoring in double figures to upend Eudora, 64-53. Shawnee Mission North rallied from a nine-point deficit at the beginning of the fourth quarter, but couldn’t get over the hump in a 50-47 loss to Shawnee Mission South. St. James came up short in a 67-59 loss to Blue Valley North. Mill Valley fell in a hole early against Blue Valley Northwest in a 62-25 loss to the Huskies. Shawnee Mission Northwest had three players score in double figures, but the Cougars couldn’t keep pace with Lawrence High in a 77-51 loss to the Lions. Shawnee Mission Northwest senior Jerad Habben notched the 100th, 101st and 102nd of his high school wrestling career to win the Sunflower League tournament on Saturday at Olathe East. Habben helped the Cougars to eighth place. Shawnee Mission North senior Tanner Willmon finished as the runner-up at 195 pounds to guide the Indians to ninth place.

Maranatha Christian Academy senior Roland Hou guided the Eagles to their 10th straight win with a triple-double in an 82-47 victory over Butler on Friday. Hou paced the Eagles with 16 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists. Shawnee Mission Northwest outlasted Leavenworth, 56-55. Shawnee Mission North was unable keep pace the Gardner Edgerton in a 62-49 loss to the Trailblazers. De Soto had its three-game winning streak snapped at the hands of Paola after falling to the Panthers, 55-41. St. James suffered a 65-44 loss against Bishop Miege.

Mill Valley senior Cooper Kaifes couldn’t have scripted a much better start to his weekend. Named winter homecoming king at halftime of the Jaguars’ boys basketball game on Friday against St. Thomas Aquinas: check. Score 23 points in a 72-60 win over the Saints: check. Find out after the game from coach Mike Bennett that you scored your 1,000th career point: check. Kaifes was able to soak it all in as he celebrated his birthday on Saturday.
Aquinas pushes past Mill Valley in 5A girls basketball top-two showdown

When St. Thomas Aquinas got off to hot starts in the first and second quarters on Friday against the Mill Valley girls basketball team, the Jaguars were able to respond with counter-punches to take brief leads. The Jaguars and Saints were all tied up at the end of the first half, but Aquinas delivered its biggest blow to begin the third quarter and Mill Valley couldn’t recover from it. Mill Valley went on to fall to Aquinas, 47-36, in a clash between the top two state-ranked teams in Class 5A. Sereena Weledji netted a game-high 21 points for the Saints. Claire Kaifes led the Jaguars with 12 points.

Shawnee Mission Northwest junior Hannah Black knocked down a 3-pointer with 1.5 seconds remaining to lift the Cougars to a 40-39 win over Leavenworth on Friday. Shawnee Mission North went down to the wire with Gardner Edgerton, but came up short, 42-40. De Soto was unable to hold on to an eight-point halftime lead in a 42-39 loss to Paola. St. James remained within striking distance for three quarters, but Bishop Miege pulled away in the fourth for a 52-31 victory. Maranatha couldn’t keep pace with Butler in a 54-24 setback. De Soto wrestling 7th at Frontier League Dual Tournament

The De Soto wrestling team finished seventh at the Frontier League Dual Tournament on Saturday at Baldwin. Cooper Pflaum (182 pounds) and Luke Barger (170) led the Wildcats with third-place finishes in their respective weight classes. Jacob Goodin placed fourth at 285 pounds.
SMNW’s Dugan 3rd, Brooks 9th at girls state wrestling

Shawnee Mission Northwest junior Whitney Dugan and senior Dominique Brooks represented the Cougars at the all-class girls state wrestling tournament on Saturday in McPherson. Dugan placed third at 152 pounds with a record of 3-1. Brooks posted a record of 2-3 to finish ninth out of 30 wrestlers at 106 pounds. The top-10 finishes from Dugan and Brooks gave the Cougars a team score of 19 points, which was good for 31st out of 61 teams.
SMNW girls, Morrison win SMSD bowling titles

The Shawnee Mission Northwest girls bowling team won a district championship on Thursday at College Lanes with Alaina Burris, Hadley Sayers and Emilia Battles taking second through fourth place. Travis Morrison was the boys district champion after leading the Cougars to third place. Cal Brooks and David Johnson finished third and fifth, respectively, to help the SM North boys finish fourth. Julia Hernandez led the SM North girls to third place after finishing fifth individually.
Mill Valley girls, St. James boys win Eastern Kansas League bowling titles

The Mill Valley girls and St. James boys bowling teams both won Eastern Kansas League titles. The Mill Valley girls won their second straight EKL championship behind a third-place finish from Bri Laluk. The St. James boys placed all six bowlers in the top 12 — including league runner-up Grant Huerter. St. James senior Carey Lawrence was the EKL girls bowling champion after leading the Thunder to fourth place. Gabriel Hakes helped the Mill Valley boys to third place after finishing ninth individually.

When the Shawnee Mission Northwest girls basketball team is firing on all cylinders, its 1-3-1 zone defense is often what sparks the Cougars. Olathe North was the most recent team that had a hard time cracking the code to SM Northwest’s zone, as the Cougars coasted past the Eagles, 57-28, on Tuesday. The win over the Eagles pushed the Cougars’ winning streak to four, and they have held their opponents to 32 points or less in each contest.
SMNW boys hoops falters in the fourth in 64-49 loss to Olathe North

Shawnee Mission Northwest boys basketball coach Mike Rose has rolled out his fair share of lineups this year, but he finally felt like he had one set over the past couple of weeks. The Cougars were winners of three straight heading into Tuesday’s home tilt against Olathe North, but an ankle injury to senior George Specht and Dale Talley being sick once again caused Rose to rely heavily on his bench. For most of the game, Rose couldn’t have been much happier with how the Cougars responded, but they weren’t able to fend off the Eagles in the fourth quarter in a 64-49 setback.
