Basketball roundup: Mill Valley, De Soto boys earn first-round wins in Huhtamaki Hardwood Classic

The Mill Valley and De Soto boys basketball teams both earned first-round victories in the Huhtamaki Hardwood Classic on Tuesday at De Soto. The Jaguars rolled to a 63-31 victory over Excelsior Springs, while the Wildcats edged Pleasant Hill, 47-42. The St. James boys basketball team fell to Shawnee Mission West, 54-51, in the first round of the Championship Showdown at SM East.
Stifling defense helps St. James power past Eudora

The St. James Academy girls basketball team picked up its first win under new coach Samantha O’Malley in a 45-28 victory over Eudora on Tuesday in the consolation semifinals of the Paola tournament. Senior Claire Kearney and freshmen Abby Dunsmore and Claire Worthington scored nine points apiece to lead the Thunder.

The De Soto and Mill Valley girls basketball teams both coasted to first-round victories in the Huhtamaki Hardwood Classic on Monday at De Soto. De Soto topped Turner, 72-12, while Mill Valley upended Excelsior Springs, 60-21. The Maranatha Christian Academy girls and boys basketball teams both fell to University Academy on Monday in their respective season openers. The MCA girls lost 34-32, while the boys fell 79-61. The St. James girls basketball team kicked off the Eudora tournament on Monday with a 45-31 loss to Piper.
SM North girls hoops tops Basehor-Linwood, 51-47, in home opener

While the Shawnee Mission North girls basketball team led by three at halftime against Basehor-Linwood despite the one-two punch of sophomore LeLe Love and senior Hannah Redick doing all of the scoring, the Indians knew that they would need a more balanced effort to come away with their first win of the season. After Love and Redick scored 12 points apiece in the first half, SM North’s stingy perimeter defense helped create some easy offense for the Indians, as they earned a 51-47 win in their home opener. It also was the first victory at SM North for coach Amanda McNeill. Love led SM North with 25 points and 12 rebounds.
Boys swimming roundup: SJA 2nd, MV 4th, DHS 8th at Lansing Relays

The St. James (second place), Mill Valley (fourth) and De Soto (eighth) competed in the Lansing Relays on Saturday. The St. James 400-yard freestyle relay team of John Amrein, Zach Kurland, Harry Tjaden and Nick Callahan led the Thunder with a first-place and state-qualifying time of 3:26.16. Chris Sprenger, Carter Lawson, Ethan Forristal and Colby Beggs finished with a second-place and state-cut time of 1:37.93 in the 200-yard freestyle relay to lead Mill Valley. De Soto was led by Cole Peterson, Curt Baker, Andrew Blazo and Eli Gratz finished with a ninth-place time of 1:03.28 in the 100-yard medley relay. Peterson, Baker, Blazo and Andre VanMeerhaeghe also posted a ninth-place time of 2:40.53 in the 200-yard breaststroke relay.
Wrestling roundup: SMNW’s Habben becomes four-time Steve Leslie Invitational champion, ties school pins record

Shawnee Mission Northwest senior Jerad Habben won his fourth consecutive Steve Leslie Invitational weight class title with pins in all eight of his matches on Saturday at Pleasant Hill. Seven of Habben’s eight pins came in the first period, as he tied the Northwest school record for wins by fall with 79. Other weight class champions included SM Northwest’s Charles Brockmann and the St. James duo of Ty Lewis and Thomas Henderson. St. James sophomore Cade Lautt led the Thunder at the Gardner-Edgerton Invitational with a 5-0 record to be the 182-pound weight class champion. Mill Valley senior Conner Ward was one of seven placers for the Jaguars at Gardner-Edgerton Invitational after finishing as the runner-up at 145 pounds. Shawnee Mission North senior Tanner Willmon took fourth in 195-pound weight class to lead the Indians at the Leavenworth Challenger. De Soto went 1-4 at the Spring Hill duals.

The Shawnee Mission Northwest girls basketball team upended Blue Valley North, 48-40, in the Shawnee Mission/Blue Valley Shootout on Saturday to get back to the .500 mark. Shawnee Mission North was also in action at the Shawnee Mission/Blue Valley Shootout, but came up short in a 49-36 loss to Blue Valley Southwest. The Shawnee Mission North boys basketball team went across the state line for its season opener, but was unable to keep pace with Lee’s Summit in a 82-54 loss at the 810 Varsity Tipoff Classic at Liberty.
Jubilant Jennies: Four Shawnee natives win national title with UCM women’s soccer

Four Shawnee natives — Mill Valley alumnae Kayla Hamner and Haley Freeman, former SM Northwest standout Mikala Modiri and SM West product Ashton Dvorak — won the NCAA Division II women’s soccer national championship with Central Missouri on Saturday at Swope Soccer Village. The Jennies rounded out their 26-0 campaign by defeating Carson-Newman (Tenn.), 1-1 (5-3 in penalty kicks). Freeman and Hamner both made penalty kicks in the shootout.
Veteran group leads Mill Valley wrestling

For Mill Valley senior wrestlers Conner Ward and Jarrett Bendure, their individual goals for their final season with the Jaguars are simple. With Ward being a three-time state runner-up and Bendure taking third twice, the Mill Valley seniors wants to finish their respective high school careers on top. But that’s only part of the plan for Ward and Bendure. The dynamic duo believes that the Jaguars have what it takes as a team to win it all after finishing fourth at the Class 5A state tournament last season.
SJA wrestling welcomes large freshman class

Replacing state champions is nothing new for the St. James wrestling team. The Thunder will be presented with that challenge once again as they look to fill the voids left by Clay Lautt and Sammy Cokeley, but a young group of St. James wrestlers are ready to step up and contribute.
De Soto wrestling looks for underclassmen to step up

Between graduating four of its five state qualifiers from last year and having a group of kids get a late start with practice while playing for the football team, there has been a lot of youth in the wrestling room for the De Soto wrestling squad. While his team lacks experience, De Soto coach Shannon Sawner said the Wildcats have not lacked on effort during the first few weeks of practice. The Wildcats kicked off their season on Friday at the Spring Hill Duals. De Soto defeated Sumner, and fell to Basehor-Linwood, Chanute, Santa Fe Trail and Holton.
Numbers, expectations rise for SMNW wrestling

Christmas came about six weeks early this year for Shawnee Mission Northwest wrestling coach Howard Newcomb. Over the past couple of years, Newcomb has had some top-tier wrestlers and a number of guys who have progressed over the season, but his squads haven’t had much depth. So when nearly 50 kids showed up to the first day of practice, Newcomb was excited to say the least.
SMN wrestling light on numbers, heavy on experience

While the Shawnee Mission North wrestling team is low on numbers this season with 17 grapplers, coach Tom Peterman is encouraged about the talent that he has in his close-knit squad. Sophomore Aidan Randall, junior Jeffrey Downey and senior Tanner Willmon all return as state qualifiers from last year, and senior Alonso Salgado is also back as a two-time state qualifier.
Specht sparks SMNW boys hoops in win over Mill Valley

In his first varsity start, Shawnee Mission Northwest senior George Specht didn’t waste much time in establishing the tempo in the Cougars’ 60-46 season-opening win over Mill Valley on Friday. Specht frequently jumped out in the passing lanes and corralled long rebounds to lead the Cougars to transition layups, and ended the night with a game-high 22 points. Cooper Kaifes led Mill Valley with 18 points.
