Volleyball roundup: De Soto, SMNW sweep triangulars; Maranatha upends Bishop Ward

The De Soto and Shawnee Mission Northwest volleyball teams went 2-0 at their respective triangulars on Tuesday. De Soto swept Shawnee Heights and Turner, while SM Northwest won in straight sets against Olathe North and SM South. Maranatha swept Bishop Ward. Mill Valley upended Blue Valley West and fell to BV Southwest. Shawnee Mission North lost to Olathe West and Lawrence High.

SMN’s Katie Kasunic, Asher Molina earn top-three finishes at Olathe Twilight Meet; SJA runners embrace opportunity

Shawnee Mission North senior cross country runners Katie Kasunic and Asher Molina earned top-three finishes at the Olathe Twilight meet on Saturday. Kasunic placed second with a time of 19:09.1. Molina took third after clocking in at 16:00. Logan Jiskra also medaled after taking 13th with a time of 16:53.2 to help the SM North boys finish third. With most of St. James’ top runners competing at the Forest Park Festival in St. Louis, a few other SJA runners got the chance to compete in the varsity races at ODAC. Matthew Schneider paced the SJA boys with a time of 17:40.1, which was good for 48th place. Sammy Kopecky finished 89th for the SJA girls after posting a time of 23:00.3. Katie Moore (2nd, 20:49.6) and Jack Moore (5th, 17:22.9) led St. James in St. Louis.

Football roundup: De Soto, SMNW move to 2-0 with Week 2 victories

The De Soto and Shawnee Mission Northwest football teams coasted to wins on Friday to improve to 2-0 on the season. The Wildcats rolled to a 47-8 victory over Wyandotte, while the Cougars cruised past Leavenworth, 41-12. Shawnee Mission North’s offense came alive late, but it wasn’t enough for the Indians in a 55-27 loss to Olathe North. Maranatha was unable to take the field on Friday after its game against Altoona-Midway was postponed.
Mill Valley football surges past St. James for 14-13 victory

The Mill Valley football team rallied for a 14-13 victory over St. James on Friday with two touchdowns in the final seven minutes. Tyler Green scored on a 2-yard run with 6:32 to play, and Jordan Preston connected with Jayce Zukowski for a 19-yard touchdown pass with 1:31 to go. Jack Moellers threw touchdown passes to JJ Tylicki (9 yards) and Mikie Tujague (33 yards) to account for the Thunder’s two scores.
De Soto cross country sweeps home meet

The De Soto girls and boys cross country teams ran to first place at their home meet on Thursday at Lexington Lake Park. Nicole Schottler and Sam Hubert were the individual champions for the Wildcats.

Mahmoud Abu Zareefeh sends SM North boys soccer past Leavenworth in double-overtime

Mahmoud Abu Zareefeh scored the golden goal with 2:53 remaining in double-overtime to guide Shawnee Mission North to a 2-1 win over Leavenworth on Thursday. Sam Goldman also scored for the Indians, who improved to 3-0.
SMNW gymnastics takes 2nd at home meet; Molly Stack sets tone for De Soto

The Shawnee Mission Northwest gymnastics team kicked off its season with a second-place finish on Wednesday in a home meet that also featured Olathe East, Olathe Northwest, Olathe West and De Soto. Celeste Gordon and Cierra Ladesich placed third and fourth, respectively, in the all-around competition for the Cougars. Zoe Kopp helped highlight the meet for SM Northwest by winning vault. Molly Stack led De Soto after tying for fifth in the all-around competition.

Mill Valley senior Jake Ashford scored in the 31st minute, and fellow senior Aidan Veal recorded his second shutout of the season to secure a 1-0 victory over St. James on Tuesday.

The St. James volleyball team completed its unbeaten homestand to open the season with a sweep of Blue Valley West on Tuesday. Shawnee Mission Northwest suffered losses to two top-five teams after coming up short against Gardner-Edgerton and Olathe Northwest. Maranatha gave Heritage Christian all it wanted, but lost in straight sets to the No. 1 team in 2A. Shawnee Mission North lost to Free State and Olathe North in its home triangular.
