Allan Gilson of Olathe flies "Kite Dude" at the Kansas City Kite Club's exhibition Saturday afternoon at Veterans Park in Shawnee.
Dave Ellis of Overland Park flies a Circo-Flex kite. Ellis, a retired teacher, is a former Kitemaker of the Year. The Circo-Flex is a French design, he said.
Don Larkie of Kansas City, Kansas, displayed his Spiky-Ball. Larkie, a concrete worker by trade, took about six weeks to personally craft the huge kite by stitching together about 400 pieces of material. "It took me a long time to build this one," he says. Larkie, a member of the Kansas City Kite Club, owns more than 400 kites.
As the kite, which resembles in many respects a hot-air balloon, becomes inflated, the reason for its name -- Spiky-Ball -- becomes apparent.
Once his creation is finally inflated, Larkie is able to leave it to its own devices and prepare another kite to fly.
They're off! Four- and five-year-olds, with parents or grandparents in tow, scramble for their share of the prizes in the annual Shawnee Easter egg hunt Saturday. The event at Gum Springs Park divided children into several age groups.
Thousands of brightly colored plastic eggs, each containing candy or another prize, awaited the children.
Tim Millman of Shawnee, left, tries to line up a shot as his wife, Kristy, gathers their four children. Blake, Zach and Luke, all 4, are triplets. Jack, seated in front of his mom, is 8 months.

Talking points
Do you believe in ghosts?
“Oh yeah. Never met one personally, but from all the stories I’ve heard, I believe.”
