Monday was the first day for area high school athletic practices and the high temperatures in the region have added concern for coaches and players. Early morning and late evening football practices will be the norm while the hot weather continues. Players like Kenney Berndt at Shawnee Mission North cool off Monday during a water break at the evening practice session.
Before the release of balloons Saturday night, Kaely Frehse says a little prayer for her cousin Jesse Lowes. Family and friends gathered at Antioch Park Saturday evening for a candlelight ceremony and the release of balloons in memory of Lowes, a former Shawnee Mission Northwest youth killed in auto accident last month.
A rite of passage for most high school sophomores is learning how to drive, which begins a new transition of freedom into high school life. But driving is a privilege, as written by state law. Keegan Williams (above), a student at Maranatha Academy, prepares to leave her home Tuesday morning for her second behind the wheel driving lesson.
