The year was a busy time, as it always is for Shawnee with many activities happening and some that stirred a little controversy. Some events, like when the city of Shawnee hosted in partnership with Merriam in setting up more than 2000 U.S. flags as part of the "Fields of Freedom" display along Johnson Drive. Of course there was the big ground breaking event for the new Justice Center and the grand wet opening of the new Splash Cove pool. After many delays, the sculptures and mural display were finally unveiled to the public at Pioneer Crossing Park. But perhaps the single event that became a heated topic of discussion was the passing of the new city smoking ordinance for all Shawnee businesses.
