A pencil sits under the stocking cap of Stan Roth's which he uses to quickly record the numbers and types of birds that are found.
Making sure they have all the birds recorded, Alexis Powell (left) and Stan Roth compare their notes together before heading back out for another round of bird counting.
Focusing their binoculars and eyes on a distant tree branch, Joe Blount (from left), Jon Standing, Stan Roth and Terry Swoper determined that the bird they all saw was a kestrel. The group was hiking last week through Camp Naish for the annual winter Christmas bird count.
Mark Andresen (far right) and Mike Ketchmark of Leawood stand for a photo along with some of the other runners from the Antarctic Ice Marathon.
The holidays are over and it's time to remove the old Christmas tree from the car:er, house. That is what Lynn Franey and her 4-year-old son, Declan, were doing Sunday at the tree drop-off site at Shawnee Mission Park. Trees can be dropped off in the parking lot near the marina from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. through Jan. 20.
